Otura sits on a high point overlooking the Vega. Other specific landscape features include Puerto del Suspiro del Moro, a mountain pass within the municipality, and Fuente de la Teja. It is a natural area in the ravines of the Río Dílar, below Molino Alto. These features offer different ways to get your bearings: views from the town, a mountain pass within the municipality, and a natural area in the ravines.

Landscape and Routes

The Ruta Suspiro del Moro is a walking route described in Otura. It follows paths through agricultural areas in the Vega, alongside irrigation channels, and through parts of the former tram network, leading to a landscape associated with the legend of Suspiro del Moro. The route was described for a provincial walking event on 22 May 2022; check its current status before making plans. The short version is estimated to be eight kilometres long, of moderate difficulty, and to take approximately two and a half hours to walk. This lets you consider the distance, difficulty level and estimated walking time separately when making your own plans.

Fuente de la Teja also has a historical connection: a large pilgrimage used to take place there in July, but it was gradually discontinued. The pilgrimage is therefore a past tradition, while the spring itself is located in the natural area in the ravines of the Río Dílar.

Church, Art and Local History

The Iglesia Parroquial Virgen de la Paz is a 16th-century Mudéjar church built on the site of an Arab hermitage. The church also houses an 18th-century altarpiece of considerable sculptural and artistic value. The church and the later altarpiece thus represent different historical periods within the same place of worship.

Otura’s Vía Crucis comprises twelve stations. Eleven have a cross each; the Calvary station has the characteristic three crosses. These numbers make the structure of this religious representation clear: eleven stations are followed by the Calvary station with its distinctive group of three crosses.

The Acueducto El Arco is part of the town’s civil heritage. It is considered Otura’s only civil monument and carries water from the Acequia de Otura. Another historical landmark is the Monumento conmemorativo al caballero 24: this memorial dates from 1815 and is located at the entrance to the Centro Sociocultural Federico García Lorca.

The Casa del Marqués de Dílar on Calle Acequia tells the story of another use of the building. In the 1940s and 1950s, it housed two separate classrooms, one for girls and one for boys. Alongside the church, the waterworks and the memorial, this former school use offers another perspective on Otura’s history.

Festivals and Local Cuisine

The patron saint’s festival in honour of the Virgen de la Aurora takes place on 8 September. At the festival of San Blas, bread loaves and roscas are blessed; they are brought by Otura residents and even by people from nearby towns. The San Marcos tradition is also known as “Ahorcar al diablo” or “Day of the Hornazos”. It features the hornazo, a roll fried in oil with a boiled egg in the middle; the festivities take place in the countryside.

The Feria de la Tapa “Suspiro del Moro” offers another link to local gastronomy. A report from May 2025 describes it as an event in Otura attended by ten bars and restaurants. The dates and details of local events vary: the patron saint’s festival takes place on 8 September, while the fair is described here with its participation figure for 2025.
