Pulianas brings together traces of history, churches and local festival traditions. Archaeological remains of agricultural villas near Granada point to Roman origins; there are also stone monuments and a cultural venue with a range of event spaces. The landscape also reveals a marked contrast: gentle hills shape the area to the north and northwest, while it is almost flat to the south and southwest. Pulianas has more to offer than its religious buildings alone.

Roman Traces and the History of Granada

The archaeological remains of agricultural villas near Granada point to Pulianas’ Roman origins. During the Nasrid period, Pulianas supplied Granada with food. From the mid-15th century onwards, the town experienced economic growth. These reflect two distinct historical connections: archaeological evidence from Roman times and the town’s later role as a supplier to Granada. Agriculture and trade provide a tangible context for the town’s history.

Churches, a Monastery and Stone Monuments

In Pulianillas, the Church of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios developed from a former monastery built in 1531; the present-day complex is called Huerto de San Antón. An old mill has also been preserved within the complex. By contrast, the parish church of San José in Pulianas dates from the 18th century and has a magnificent altarpiece. The two sites represent different aspects of the religious heritage: a complex with a former monastery and mill, and a parish church with its altarpiece.

Pulianas’ Via Crucis comprises numerous stone crosses around the town centre, along with other crosses and bas-reliefs on building façades. On Camino Viejo, it includes a group of three stone crosses dating from the 16th century. Jesus Christ is carved into the middle cross; the people of Pulianas venerate this Christ as Cristo de la Era. The Via Crucis was observed during Holy Week. Both individual crosses and features on building façades form part of this religious heritage.

The church of San José houses images of the Virgen de los Dolores, Nuestro Padre Jesús Nazareno and the Virgen del Rosario. The respective images are carried in the corresponding processions on Good Friday or during the patron saint festivities in August. The procession schedule may vary.

Culture and Local Festival Traditions

The Casa de la Cultura “Maestro Dióscoro Galindo” is a versatile cultural venue. Its programme includes theatre, music, conferences, cinema, exhibitions and workshops. Alongside the religious heritage, a variety of cultural activities also take centre stage, from stage performances and film to exhibitions and workshops.

The La Candelaria festival features a traditional bonfire where saladillas, ham and wine are shared. After the procession, traditional roscas are handed out. The festival combines food and drink shared around the fire with a clearly defined culinary finale after the procession.

The celebrations on the third weekend in August include a procession on either Saturday or Sunday, alternating each year. The image of Nuestra Señora de los Remedios or that of the Rosario is carried in the procession. If you plan to visit Pulianas for the occasion, check the specific event dates in advance.

Landscape and Connections to Granada

The gentle hills and low rises to the north and northwest of Pulianas lie on the slopes of the Sierras de Alfacar, VĂznar and de la Yedra. To the south and southwest, the terrain is almost flat, with only gentle slopes. This comparison highlights the different landscape forms within the area without treating them as the same.
