Chauchina combines historic heritage with a route through the Vega Baja and religious traditions dating back to the early 20th century. This gives you several ways to focus your stay: architecture, landscape, music and local traditions.

The Torre de Roma and its history

The Torre de Roma is classified as a Bien de Interés Cultural and is a Nasrid tower about 14 metres high. It was built in the 13th or 14th century. Three floors with barrel vaults, a terrace and a cistern define its documented architectural form. The barrel vaults give the floors a distinctive architectural feature; the terrace and cistern complete the picture of the structure. One historical interpretation states that the tower was within sight of the Alhambra and Castillo de Moclín. This forms part of the tower’s past and is distinct from a claim about a view today.

A route through the Vega Baja

The Ruta de la Vega a la Torre de Roma begins beside the Ermita de la Virgen del Espino, also known as the Virgen del Pincho, and continues to the Iglesia de Nuestro Señor de la Humildad. The hermitage and the church are two clearly identified points on the route. It passes through the Vega Baja, among cultivated fields and irrigation channels, and runs parallel to the Río Genil. This agricultural landscape adds another focus to the themes of architectural history and religious heritage. If you are considering Chauchina for this route, you can take both the buildings and the route through the Vega into account when planning your visit.

Church and religious traditions

The Iglesia de Nuestro Señor de la Humildad is dedicated to the Santo Cristo de la Humildad. The current church building dates from 1982. It has a central nave and two side aisles connected to the central nave by round arches. This layout gives the church a clearly defined architectural arrangement.

At the Ermita de la Virgen del Espino, local tradition sits alongside datable building history. According to local tradition, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared to a local woman at the site of the hermitage in 1906. The first chapel was inaugurated in 1918. The image of the Virgen del Espino is kept at the hermitage by Capuchin Poor Clare nuns; the people of Chauchina have venerated the Virgen for a century. This allows the religious tradition and the history of the chapel’s construction to be considered separately.

Music, festivals and special interests

The Certamen de Bandas de MĂşsica de AndalucĂa began in 1989 and has been held continuously ever since, under the direction and leadership of the Ayuntamiento de Chauchina. It promotes the dissemination and appreciation of Andalusian music and its composers. A culinary tradition is also linked to a festival: Hornazo is eaten at a traditional festival in Chauchina.

The AsociaciĂłn Museo Pinballica maintains, restores and preserves pinball machines. A report dated 20 March 2025 described the venue as both a museum and a space for recreational games; at the time, the public could play the pinball machines. Before visiting, check whether this access is still available.

For the 2026 edition, the Saucina Bike Race is described as a non-competitive mountain biking event. Its route passes through the municipal areas of Chauchina, Fuente Vaqueros, Láchar, Chimeneas and Santa Fe. The route may change from one edition to another, so the details for the relevant edition are what matter when planning your trip.

Getting to Chauchina and hotels

Chauchina can be reached via the A-92, exit 227 towards Chauchina and Fuente Vaqueros. You should check road conditions separately. When looking for hotels, you can first decide whether the Torre de Roma, the religious buildings, the route through the Vega or a cultural interest is the main focus of your stay.
