El Viso offers several distinctive discoveries for visitors: a major religious pageant, historic architecture, crafts and an air-raid shelter from the Spanish Civil War. An environmental education centre and two routes of markedly different lengths add to the cultural attractions. You can focus on history or include exercise and nature in your visit.
Cultural Events and Living Traditions
The Auto Sacramental de los Reyes Magos was declared a “Fiesta of National Tourist Interest in Andalusia.” The corresponding resolution from the Junta de Andalucía is dated 16 August 1999. The pageant is currently performed every four years. More than 100 residents of El Viso usually take part, including a choir and a dance group. According to older residents, the celebration dates back to 1835 or even earlier; this dating is attributed to their oral tradition.
The Fiestas de Santa Ana take place every year from 24 to 29 July. Traditionally, the encierros featuring young bulls are a central part of the programme; individual events may vary. This annual festival is therefore clearly distinct from the four-year performance cycle of the Auto Sacramental.
Architecture, Art and Local History
The Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación dates from the late 15th century and is classified among the so-called “churches of the Mesta.” Its tower is divided into four sections: the bell tower is in the second section, and the bell is in the fourth. Its classification as a church of the Mesta and the layout of its tower give architecture enthusiasts two specific features to look out for when exploring the building.
A permanent exhibition centre displays works by Aurelio Teno. It is located on Avenida Parque, above Bar del Parque. Another place to see crafts is the Centro de Artesanía de Los Pedroches: it currently houses Ofiarpe, the Asociación de Artesanos de Los Pedroches, and displays work by artisans from the comarca on the ground floor. The two venues have different focuses: the work of a single artist at one, and regional crafts at the other.
Beneath the present-day Plaza de la Constitución lies the main air-raid shelter from the Spanish Civil War, much of which was dug out by local residents. Its accessible gallery is 78.5 metres long and zigzags beneath the square. As access arrangements may change, it is best to check current visiting options in advance.
Environmental Education and Routes
The Aula de la Naturaleza “El Pocito” provides an overview of the natural environment of the Los Pedroches comarca. The centre is primarily intended for school visits, where visitors can learn about the comarca’s most common flora and fauna. Its facilities and areas include exhibition rooms, a conference room, an agricultural-themed area, and spaces for rest and relaxation. This environmental education complements the town’s stronger focus on buildings and history with an insight into the comarca’s natural environment.
There are routes of varying lengths and suitable for different ways of getting around. One route is about 11 kilometres long, starting at the Ermita de Santa Rosalía and ending at the La Colada recreation area. It can be completed on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. A shorter route of about two kilometres can be done on foot or by bicycle and allows visitors to see the municipality’s individual hermitages. Check trail conditions locally before setting out.
Getting There and Planning
The main road access to El Viso is via the N-502, which directly connects several nearby towns in the comarca. Check road conditions before travelling. The route of about 11 kilometres from the Ermita de Santa Rosalía to the La Colada recreation area is considerably longer than the roughly 2-kilometre route that takes in the individual hermitages. For a visit to the shelter, you should also check the current access arrangements.
