A 3.9-kilometre route, a spring dating from 1910 and the Castillo de Viandar offer different ways to explore El Hoyo’s landscape and local history. The Eucalyptus of Fuente Agria and local festival and food traditions add to the picture. You can shape your trip around your interests, balancing outdoor activity, natural features, cultural heritage and regional cuisine.
Walking or cycling the Ruta El Hoyo
The Ruta El Hoyo starts in the hamlet of El Hoyo in Belmez, Córdoba. It is 3.9 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. Its length gives the activity a clear scope, with walking and cycling as two options. Both are different ways to tackle the same route.
Landscape, spring and eucalyptus
El Hoyo is surrounded by mountains, dehesas and reservoirs. Holm oaks and streams also shape the landscape around the hamlet, where the Fuente de la Herrumbrosa is nestled. Built in 1910, the spring has a shaded rest area for people passing through the area. Its iron-rich water also earned it the popular name Fuente Agria. Historically, it was used for consumption; it was also believed to have medicinal uses.
Another distinctive natural feature is the Eucalyptus of Fuente Agria de El Hoyo. It belongs to the species Eucalyptus camaldulensis. Its broad trunk base forms a platform with a circumference of almost 16 metres. The tree is listed in the Andalusian Inventory of Outstanding Trees and Woodlands and is one of two trees in the province of Córdoba catalogued as outstanding eucalyptus trees. Its unusual trunk base and status as an outstanding tree offer a reason in their own right to explore the area’s natural features.
The Castillo de Viandar and its history
The Castillo de Viandar lies about 500 metres north of El Hoyo, on the 774-metre-high Alto del Castillo del Hoyo. It forms part of the cultural heritage of the Alto Guadiato mining landscape. The site was probably built during the Caliphate period to protect the approaches to Córdoba from the northwest. This historical interpretation links the castle’s location to its presumed defensive purpose. Its landscape, elevation and history make a visit to the Castillo a different focus from the route or the spring.
Festivals and food in El Hoyo
The Fiestas Mayores in El Hoyo are dedicated to the Virgen de Los Reyes. The Feria Gastronómica de El Hoyo is also part of the local events calendar. Held annually for residents and visitors, it showcases the area’s typical products and traditional cuisine. If you want to plan your visit around the fair, check the event dates before travelling.
In connection with the 2025 Feria Gastronómica de El Hoyo, tastings were offered of typical tapas, traditional cured meats, Vino de Pitarra and homemade sweets. There was also a migas tasting at the Caseta Municipal. These specific tastings showcase different aspects of local cuisine, from tapas and cured meats to sweets and migas. Together with the festivals, they add a culinary reason to visit to the area’s nature and cultural experiences.
