Encinas Reales can be explored on a trip through two main themes: religious architecture and paths through a strikingly varied landscape. Its buildings range from an 18th-century chapel to a neoclassical church, while the hiking trail descriptions give specific starting points and river courses. This lets you decide in advance whether architectural history, exploring the terrain on foot, or both will be the focus of your stay.

Sacred Buildings with Distinctive Historical Features

The Ermita de Jesús de las Penas is protected as a Bien de Interés Cultural in the Monument category. It is considered an example of 18th-century Baroque architecture. Polychrome stucco decorates the spandrels, transverse arches and dome above the crossing. The crossing is where the nave and transept intersect; this helps explain the dome’s position within the building. Its protected status and architecture thus offer two different points of reference for understanding the building.

The Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación is neoclassical and follows a Latin cross plan with three naves. It was built from 1801 to 1814 at the behest of the Dukes of Medinaceli, to plans by architect Andrés Cordón. It therefore stands alongside the older Ermita de Jesús de las Penas in terms of chronology, but belongs to a different architectural tradition. Comparing the two takes you from Baroque stucco decoration to a church whose plan and layout are defined by its cross shape and naves.

Another historic stop is in Vadofresno: the Ermita de Nuestra Señora de Belén dates from the 18th century. The Duke of Medinaceli had it built in 1705; it was consecrated on December 12 of the same year. This date adds another specific detail and another location within the municipality to the building history of the two churches in Encinas Reales.

Hiking Trails and Terrain

The Ruta senderista Encinas Reales - Anzur starts and ends at the Ermita del Calvario. Along the way, paths run parallel to the Río Anzur and Arroyo Hondo; the route is in the Sierra Subbética. The landscape is highly varied, with pronounced elevations, narrow valleys, and sloping, rocky areas. The terrain profile, as well as the rivers, is therefore an important consideration when planning a hike. If you are thinking of taking this route, you can take these details into account when choosing the right day and deciding what you would like to focus on.

The Camino Mozárabe offers another hiking option. The Encinas Reales–Lucena stage is 20.4 kilometers long and starts at the town hall on the Málaga–Córdoba road. The first yellow waymarks can be reached via Calle Camino Viejo de Lucena. After crossing the motorway through an underpass, the route reaches the Río Anzur. This stage therefore offers both a specific distance and notable waypoints at the start and along the route. As waymarks and road conditions may change, check the current route before setting out.

River Landscapes and Natural Surroundings

The municipality, characterized by olive groves, is crossed by the RĂo Genil and RĂo Anzur; the Anzur is a tributary of the Genil. In addition to olive groves, the natural surroundings include holm oaks, tamarisks, ash trees, roses, oleanders, poplars and blackberry bushes. Nightingales, lesser kestrels and turtle doves are also mentioned. This plant and bird life adds further distinctive features to the landscape alongside the rivers.

In Vadofresno, visitors can enjoy a view of the Río Genil close to the Iznájar Reservoir. This gives the village its own distinctive landscape setting within the municipality. If you would like to include hiking and nature observation in your trip, you will find different points of interest here than in the town’s architecture: the river landscape, plants and bird species all help orient you to this area.

Festivals and Events Throughout the Year

Semana Santa in Encinas Reales is a traditional religious festival organized by five brotherhoods. The processions begin on the evening of Maundy Thursday; religious, brotherhood and cultural events also take place during the week. Exact dates and procession routes may change, so it is advisable to check that year’s program before your trip.

La Noche Encandilada is a cultural and tourism event held on the last Saturday in August. During the event, candles, oil lamps and torches replace electric lighting. If you are considering planning your trip around this festival, check the date and program for that year’s edition. This lets you plan a stay around the event without treating the annual dates as a fixed schedule.
