In Doña Mencía, there is plenty to discover, from a castle with surviving walls to archaeological collections and trails along a former railway line. You can focus your stay on culture or combine historic sites with an outdoor route.
Castle complex and Torre del Homenaje
The castle’s archaeological complex includes structures from different centuries: a 15th-century castle, the 17th-century oil mill of the Duke of Sessa, and a municipal granary dating from the 17th to 18th centuries. The castle was founded by Diego Fernández de Córdoba in 1415; much of its original walls have survived. The complex’s different elements therefore tell the story not only of the castle itself, but also of the site’s later uses.
At 17 metres high, the Torre del Homenaje is the complex’s most significant architectural landmark. It offers a viewpoint overlooking the site, the historic landscape closely associated with the castle, and the Sierras Subbéticas Natural Park. For anyone interested in local history, it clearly shows the connection between the building and its surrounding landscape.
Archaeology and historic sites
The Museo Histórico-Arqueológico is located in the Casa de la Cultura «Juan Valera». Its collection preserves material from more than 300 archaeological sites in the province of Córdoba and the adjoining area of Jaén. Exhibits include remains from the Lower Palaeolithic, dated to between 250,000 and 100,000 years ago. The collection thus reaches far beyond the castle’s history and includes finds from a wider part of the region.
Another highlight is the Iglesia Vieja. Built in 1420, it was expanded by the Dominican community between 1737 and 1742. The former church grounds were converted into an open-air auditorium in 2000, where cultural events are held in summer. The site thus combines the architectural history of the Iglesia Vieja with a later cultural use.
Doña Mencía’s Semana Santa offers another perspective on local heritage. Traditions include the Vía Crucis, the Lavatorio, the Prendimiento, the Descendimiento and the Bendición at the «cuatro esquinas». They are accompanied by «rezaores» and «pregoneros». Fourteen brotherhoods or religious associations are involved in organising the celebrations; Semana Santa has been recognised as an event of tourist interest in Andalusia.
Vía Verde and circular routes
The Vía Verde de la Subbética runs for 58 kilometres between Linares and Puente Genil along a former railway line, passing through Doña Mencía. It is designed for cyclists, walkers, hikers and horse riders. Doña Mencía station has a restaurant and a recreation area with places to rest, bicycle parking, a water point, and a parking area for caravans and motorhomes. Bicycles and environmentally friendly vehicles are also available for hire there. If you plan to use these facilities, check in advance that they are currently operating, especially the restaurant and rental services.
The listed route lengths offer different options when choosing a walk. The Ruta de las Fuentes is an approximately 11-kilometre circular route that ends at the former Doña Mencía railway station. Another circular route starts and ends in the town centre and is approximately 2,780 metres long. A circular route of around 7 kilometres starts and ends at the Pilar de Abajo, also known as the «Fuente del Ejido». Comparing them helps you choose according to distance and start or end point, without treating the routes as a single walk.
The Sierra Abrevia hiking trail passes through the municipalities of Zuheros and Doña Mencía. The Sierra de la Abrevia is considered a landscape of high natural value, is protected as a natural park within the RENPA, and has been designated a UNESCO Global Geopark. Alongside historic sites, the landscape and its protected status are therefore further themes to explore on your trip.
Wines from Montilla-Moriles
Doña Mencía is part of the Montilla-Moriles wine region, which has a designation of origin. Wines with this designation are available for tasting and purchase in the town. The associated wine and tourism offering also includes bodegas and lagares open to visitors. For tastings and visits, it is helpful to check current opening times, as availability can change.
