The Ruta de La Dehesa de la Vera is 13.8 kilometres long and leads through a landscape of holm oaks, a rich variety of birdlife and livestock farms. Alongside this moderately difficult cycling route, Añora has shorter routes rated as easy; its architectural heritage and festive traditions offer further specific themes to help plan your trip.

Cycling Routes and Landscape

The Ruta de La Dehesa de la Vera is fully accessible by bicycle and starts about 100 metres from the Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña. After turning onto the Camino del Molino del Cubo, the first kilometres pass through the Berrocoso and Cucadero landscape areas. Along the way, the route passes an old FEVE railway bridge over the Guadarramilla. The Ruta del Pozo de la Torre is seven kilometres long, easy and also fully accessible by bicycle. It offers views of the Paraje del Torrequillo, an area associated with gathering wild asparagus.

The Ruta de Las Encinas Centenarias is also easy and fully accessible by bicycle; it is 6.5 kilometres long. The Ruta del Tejar de Santa Cruz and the Ruta de La Losilla are both rated as moderately difficult and are each 7.7 kilometres long. The former passes an old brickworks beside a stream. On the Ruta de La Losilla, a short detour about 300 metres beyond the junction with the Camino de Dos Torres leads to archaeological remains. The circuit can end at the restored Tejar de Abajo. Route details and difficulty ratings may change; check them before setting out.

Añora’s dehesa landscape combines traditional livestock farming, including the breeding of Iberian pigs, with holm oaks, Portuguese oaks, rockroses, broom, lavender and rosemary. Wildlife in Añora includes black kites, bee-eaters, tits, storks and scops owls, as well as hedgehogs, hares and wild boar. Parque San Martín lies about six kilometres from Añora, on Cerro del Cuerno at an altitude of 704 metres. This natural viewpoint offers views across large parts of the Los Pedroches region.

At the end of October or beginning of November, more than 200 pairs of cyclists gather in Parque San Martín for Añora Bikend, a cycling event; exact dates may vary. The Jornadas Ornitológicas are also held annually in the Los Pedroches region. They include birdwatching routes to identify different species in their natural habitats, including in Parque San Martín and nearby areas of ecological value, as well as demonstrations of scientific bird ringing. Details of the annual programme may change.

Architecture and History

A distinctive feature of Añora’s traditional architecture is its fachadas de tiras: granite lines trace the structure of the houses against whitewashed walls. In the heart of Añora stands the Parroquia de San Sebastián, a representative example of the municipality’s historical and spiritual heritage. The Ermita de la Virgen de la Peña dates from the 18th century and stands at Añora’s highest point. Also built of stone and traditional materials, the Ermita de San Pedro reflects the vernacular architecture of the Los Pedroches region.

The Puente de la Dehesa has Roman origins and was rebuilt in the 18th century. The Museo de Añora offers another way to explore the town’s history: its more than 740 exhibits cover Añora’s everyday history, traditional festivals and archaeological past.

Festivals and Regional Cuisine

On the first weekend of May, streets, courtyards and homes in Añora open their doors to showcase an old community tradition. It includes crosses displayed outdoors, for example in streets, squares and courtyards, as well as crosses inside homes, which open to the public for the occasion. During the day, visitors can explore Añora as an open-air museum as part of this tradition; in the evening, traditional music and shared local dishes are part of the celebrations. Which places take part and the exact programme vary from year to year.

La Candelaria is celebrated on 2 February with large bonfires. Children and young people collect wood over several days for the occasion. On 11 November, Añora celebrates San Martín with dinner among friends and pranks involving gachas. Easter Monday, locally known as Día de los Hornazos, is associated with a picnic in the countryside and a typical sweet pastry with a boiled egg. Añora’s cuisine also features dishes made with Iberian pork, produce from family gardens and pastries traditionally prepared for local festivals and celebrations.
