A building more than 500 years old offers a special introduction to the cultural history of Laško: the Aškerc Homestead at Senožete also includes a thatched granary and a toplar hayloft. The homestead presents a literary and ethnological collection about the poet Anton Aškerc and offers tastings of homemade sheep’s cheese. Architectural styles, literature and regional traditions come together here; other places offer further historical and scenic highlights.
Museum and historical traces
The Laško Museum is housed in a renovated old market barn on Aškerčev trg. Its three permanent exhibitions focus on Laško’s history under the title “Laško – A Journey Through Time,” the brewing industry and health tourism, and the geology of the Laško area. The museum presents the town’s historical development from prehistoric times onward. It is included in several guided tour programmes and is also open to individual visitors.
There are also traces of earlier eras in the townscape: a depiction of Medusa on Orožnov trg points to the area of Laško having been settled as early as Roman times. Tabor Castle historically served as the administrative seat of the local nobility and as a courthouse; today it houses a restaurant with a wine cellar. Jurklošter Charterhouse was founded in the 12th century. A defensive tower and the Church of St Maurice remain in the Gračnica Valley.
Hiking trails with different highlights
The A1 – Planinska pot na Šmohor leads through forests and meadows to a popular destination above Laško. The A2 – Rečiška krožna planinska pot loops around the Rečica Valley. The moderately difficult Orionova pot offers another blend of nature and culture, following the traces of ancient cultures in the Gračnica Valley. It starts and ends in Jurklošter, passing through Mrzlo Polje, Pojerje, Blatni vrh, Puršnica and Marof. Počerenski slap is a named viewpoint along this route.
Route distances also help you plan: Pot SREČNO is 29.7 kilometres long in total, of which 7.7 kilometres lie within the municipality of Laško. Laški krog is a 49-kilometre cycling route starting in Laško. For several years, the municipality has hosted traditional hiking events on well-maintained and signposted themed trails.
Views, parkland and thermal water
The 851-metre-high Mount Sveta Trojica above Jurklošter is a popular destination for outings and views. In clear weather, the view extends to the Dolomites in Italy, Sljeme in Croatia, and several border mountains in Austria, including Peca. A hiking route above the town of Laško also leads to the wind harp on Hum.
Giant sequoias grow in the spa park at Rimske Toplice; they were planted in honour of Queen Victoria of England. Along the path through the park are 24 Roman-style energy points. Thermana Laško has swimming pools filled with thermal water; as facilities may change, check the latest information before your visit. Fly fishing is possible on the Gračnica in summer.
Dishes and local traditions
Laška južina is a vegetarian dish made with millet porridge, potatoes, beans and honey-glazed vegetables. Another traditional Laško speciality is Potica s pregreto smetano. You can learn about the tradition of beekeeping from several local beekeepers. The Pavus restaurant is the first in Laško to receive the “Okusiti Laško” certificate.
The Beer and Flowers Festival Laško brings together beer and colourful floral displays in a three-day event. If you would like to plan your stay around it, check the event dates in advance.
