Predjama Castle has stood in the middle of a 123-metre-high cliff face for more than 800 years. The combination of the castle, collections and a nearby church gives visitors several points of connection to the area’s cultural history. Those choosing Predjama for a stay can explore a range of themes: the castle itself, the museum collections and a seasonal cave.
Predjama Castle in the cliff face
During their visit, visitors can see the armoury, chapel, kitchen and torture chamber. These rooms offer different perspectives on the castle within its cliffside setting. Predjama Castle has also been used as a filming location for numerous documentaries and feature films. For film and culture enthusiasts, this is another point of connection to the area’s history, without requiring a dedicated film programme.
Two collections in the visitor centre
The Stara Dama Museum, housed in the Predjama Castle visitor centre, contains two collections. The collection on the First World War focuses in particular on the Isonzo Front. It can also be understood in the context of the area’s regional role: the front shaped it as a hinterland, and it was logistically connected to supplying the front.
The second collection has a different focus. It features many forest animals that live in the local area, including birds, deer, wild cats, wolves and bears. It also presents the work of hunters and forest wardens, as well as life in the forest. The same museum therefore brings together historical themes of war and insights into animals and life in the forest.
Church and medieval paintings
The branch church of Žalostne Matere božje, the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows, stands close to the castle. Aeneas Silvius Piccolomini, Bishop of Trieste and later Pope Pius II, consecrated it in 1449. Inside are medieval paintings dating from the mid-15th century. They were commissioned by the Lords of Jamski, probably Erasmus. The proximity of the church and castle thus connects two distinct historical themes, although they are not part of the same building.
Summer tournament and seasonal cave
The Erasmus Knights’ Tournament takes place at Predjama Castle every summer. Knights, archers, swordsmen and horse riders demonstrate their combat skills and historical ways of life in a knight’s camp. The event is a seasonal attraction alongside the area’s enduring cultural highlights. Please check specific dates separately.
An important seasonal restriction applies to the cave beneath Predjama Castle: in winter, it is inhabited by a bat colony and is closed to visitors while the bats hibernate. Check seasonal access conditions before your visit. Visitors with combination tickets for Postojna Cave and Predjama Castle can use a shuttle bus, subject to availability. Check availability in advance; fares may also change seasonally.
Cycling route through Predjama
The Grajska kolesarska pot is a circular cycling route that passes through Predjama. Route conditions and markings may change; check them before setting out.
