A guided tour of Postojna Cave lasts about 90 minutes. Postojna also offers a range of other highlights: a karst exhibition, a family cycling route and trails on the town hill of Sovič. The ethnological exhibition and the Ozbič Barbershop can be visited by prior arrangement and accompanied by a guide. If you are planning a stay, you can first consider whether the cave, the town’s history or outdoor activities are your main priority.
Cave: a guided visit by train and on foot
Postojna Cave is open year-round, including Sundays and public holidays. Opening hours may change, so check the current times before your visit. Every tour is accompanied by a guide and narrated in Slovenian, Italian, English or German.
A guided tour covers approximately five kilometres of the cave. Part of the route is travelled by train and part on foot. The distance therefore describes the section of the cave covered, not a route walked entirely on foot. For planning your day, the tour duration and the means of getting around are two separate points to consider.
Cycling route and trails on Sovič
The circular Junior cycling route winds at a leisurely pace through the town of Postojna and the surrounding countryside. It is suitable for families and offers a dedicated way to explore the town and its surroundings by bike.
The 677-metre-high town hill of Sovič is next to Postojna’s oldest district. From the starting point at Majlont, it can be reached via marked trails. The cycling route is a loop through the town and surrounding countryside, while Sovič centres on a named hill. The two options therefore differ both in how you get around and in their setting.
Karst exhibition and town history
At the Notranjska Museum Postojna, the permanent exhibition “Muzej krasa” is described as Europe’s most comprehensive karst exhibition. On display are the skeletons of Ice Age animals, including a cave bear and a steppe bison, as well as cave-dwelling animals viewed under a microscope. Large Ice Age animals and the microscopic examination of cave life offer different insights into the exhibition.
The Ozbič Barbershop in Postojna was revived in 2021 with its original furnishings and a new story. Visits to the ethnological exhibition and the barbershop are possible by prior arrangement and accompanied by a guide. This distinction is important when planning your cultural visits: prior arrangement is required for both.
Getting there and your stay
If you arrive by train, you will reach the town of Postojna directly. From there, Postojna Cave Park is about a 25-minute walk away. A local bus connects Postojna railway station, Postojna bus station and the park. If you plan to take the bus, check the timetable in advance, as transport connections may change.
When planning your day, you can consider separately the approximate walking time to the Cave Park, the duration of the cave tour and the prior arrangement required for the two cultural visits. This lets you organise activities around your interests without treating the cycling route, town hill, museum and cave visit as one fixed itinerary.
