The hiking trail on Nanos begins in Razdrto, at a large gravel parking area just before the motorway overpass. Erasmus’ Cycling Trail also starts in Razdrto, at the foot of the mountain. This puts two different routes in focus: the ascent on foot, with two options, and a cycling route that passes through several named places.
Hiking on Nanos
At a fork, the Nanos hiking trail splits into an easier, gentler route and a steep one. The two options therefore differ in their basic character from the outset. Those considering the gentler option can use its destination as a guide: after about an hour and a half, it reaches the Nanos plateau above the Church of St. Jerome.
The steep route features metal footholds in the rock face and metal cables. When visibility is good, it offers views of the Vipava Valley, the Karst plateau, Vremščica and Snežnik. Difficulty and scenery are two concrete differences between the routes. As conditions can change, it is sensible to check the condition of the steep route before setting out.
The Church of St. Jerome is on the southern slopes of Nanos, above Rebernice and below Grmada. It was built in 1360. The easier hiking trail reaches the plateau above the church; the church itself is therefore a separate historical point of reference when planning an excursion on Nanos.
Cycling through the villages
Erasmus’ Cycling Trail offers a different perspective on the area. Starting in Razdrto at the foot of Nanos, it follows a quiet paved road through Veliko Ubeljsko and Malo Ubeljsko. The route also passes through Strane and reaches Predjama Castle, which is built directly into a high rock face. When choosing a route, you can therefore take into account a quiet road section through the two villages and other named stops along the cycling route, without needing to specify a walking or cycling time.
Strane is home to a yew tree said in local lore to be the thickest and oldest yew in Slovenia. The attribution is specifically presented as local lore. Another notable landmark awaits at the end of the cycling route: Predjama Castle, whose defining feature is its position directly in the high rock face. The yew and the castle give the described route two distinct thematic highlights.
Bread-making tradition at HudiÄŤevec
At Hudičevec, bread has been baked in a brick oven for more than 70 years using Grandmother Pavla’s recipe. The recipe, baking method and long-standing tradition make this culinary discovery a subject in its own right alongside hiking and cycling. It adds another interest to choose from, so your stay need not be shaped by just one route.
What to consider when looking for accommodation
If you are looking for a holiday apartment, the interests described here can help you organise your plans: would you like to focus on climbing Nanos, choosing between the easier and steeper routes, on the cycling route through the named places, or on the bread-making tradition at HudiÄŤevec? This distinction can help you plan your stay around specific experiences.
