The Planinsko polje is known for its karst landscape and birdlife, while Planinska jama is known for an underground river confluence; the Planina Historic Trail follows traces of the Rapallo border. These themes reveal different sides of Planina: nature, caves, history, and trails through the landscape.
Karst Landscape and Nature Trail
The Planinsko polje is considered a classic karst field and gave its name to karst fields around the world. Its meadows contrast with a lake that appears periodically. As a Slovenian Important Bird Area (IBA), the area is of international ornithological importance, particularly in connection with the globally threatened corncrake (Crex crex).
The marked Scilkina učna pot nature trail runs across the Planinsko polje and is 11.5 kilometers long. Its 19 information boards explain the polje’s features, its animal and plant life, and the flooding. The trail thus combines a longer route with specific insights into the landscape and its water conditions.
Cave Visit and Underground Confluence
Planinska jama lies at the edge of the Planinsko polje. Inside the cave, the Rak River from Rakov Ĺ kocjan and the Pivka River from Postojnska jama meet underground; together, they form the Unica River. The standard tour follows a safe, 500-meter-long path to the confluence and takes about an hour. Check the current schedule before your visit.
There is also a longer boat tour through Planinska jama, lasting seven to eight hours. It is possible when water levels are low and with advance reservation. The time required makes the boat tour very different from the standard visit; for planning purposes, it is more of a separate activity than a brief detour.
The Rapallo Border and Historical Heritage
The Planina Historic Trail passes six points along surviving traces of the Rapallo border. Its map shows preserved border markers and documentary layers of the border. The route thus focuses both on the visible markers and on the historical context.
Guided walks are available for groups, schools, and individuals. If you are interested in a guided tour, ask about scheduling in advance. Ravbarjev stolp, also known as Mali grad, offers a separate glimpse of the area’s built heritage: it stands on a hill in Kačja vas near Planina, close to the entrance to Planinska jama. The striking cylindrical tower, a keep, is all that remains of the former Mali grad.
Hike or Mountain Bike to Planinska gora
A hiking route to Planinska gora starts in Planina, near the Church of Saint Margaret. For mountain bikers, gravel roads from Planina and Liplje lead to the summit and are suitable for this activity. The described hiking route starts at the church, while mountain bikers can take gravel roads to the summit from either of two starting points.
For planning your time, Planinska jama offers the clearest comparison: the standard tour takes about an hour, while the boat tour takes seven to eight hours and also requires low water levels and advance reservation. The nature trail and border route offer different themes to explore during a stay in Planina.
