The hundred-year-old plane tree in Grajski vrt in the centre of Renče is protected as a natural monument of local importance. It offers a striking introduction to a place whose attractions range from the history of the parish church and castle to birdwatching and memorial sites. Visitors to Renče can choose which of these themes to focus on.
Church and Local History
The parish church of St Mohor and Fortunatus was first mentioned in 1470. The present-day late Baroque church building was constructed in the second half of the 18th century. The two dates refer to different stages: the earlier date marks the first mention of the church, while the later period refers to the present-day building.
Stari plac also points to an earlier history. The origins of Renče Castle date back to the 13th century, when a medieval manor stood on this site. A remnant of the complex shapes today’s Stari plac.
Lower Vipava and Birdwatching
Southwest of Renče, the Renče clay extraction areas and their immediate surroundings lie in the lower Vipava. Together, they form the Important Bird Area of the same name. The Renče clay extraction area is Slovenia’s only confirmed breeding site for the greylag goose; a birdwatching station is located near the abandoned clay pit.
A two-kilometre footpath runs around the lake to the birdwatching station at the Renče clay extraction area. This links the lake and the station, while the bird area itself offers a broader view of the landscape along the lower Vipava. For birdwatchers, this is a different facet of Renče from its local history.
Trails and Memorial Sites
A 22.6-kilometre section of the Walk of Peace between Nova Gorica and Lokvica runs through the municipality of Renče-Vogrsko. From Renče, the trail begins to climb towards the Karst. Vinišče World War I Memorial Park is part of the Walk of Peace between the Alps and the Adriatic.
The park is located in a hamlet of Renče and preserves trenches, bunkers, a cavern and constructed paths. On the hilltop, beside the cavern, stands a six-metre-high wooden bell-shaped tower serving as a memorial. The preserved structures and striking monument give the site its own historical significance.
A trail starting in Renče introduces Simon Gregorčič with a short biography on an information board. At each stop, boards also provide information about the poet’s life and anecdotes about his writing. These biographical details complement the experience of the landscape along the trail.
Museums and Local History
The Field Hospital Museum is housed in the former mortuary of Renče cemetery and presents the work of the Renče field hospital. Exhibits include original objects and the uniform of a nurse from Austria-Hungary. The museum can be visited during TIC Nova Gorica opening hours; after a phone call, staff open and close the exhibition remotely. Check the current opening hours and arrangements before your visit.
A small museum collection is devoted to the Aleksandrinke: women from Renče and the surrounding area who worked in Egypt from the second half of the 19th century until the Second World War. Together with the Field Hospital Museum, it offers two distinct ways to explore the municipality’s past.
Games and Wine Tradition
Škuljanje is a traditional social and sporting game from Primorska. An individual or team throws a flat-shaped stone or half a brick onto a playing field, aiming to get as close as possible to the target stone. A club has a section in Renče. Demonstrations of the game are part of the tourist offering of the municipality of Renče-Vogrsko at holidays, gatherings and events.
Wine is also associated with a recurring tradition: every year, divers sink an iron cage containing wines from local winemakers into the Vipava beneath the bridge in Renče. The combination of landscape, history, games and wine offers different starting points for choosing the focus of your stay in Renče.
