In Žirovnica, traces of the past meet routes with different focuses: the Čopova rojstna hiša is located in the old village centre, and there are also circular routes, hiking sections and cycling routes to choose from. You can tailor your trip to whether you mainly want to explore historic places, get around by bike, or combine the two.
Cultural Sites and Layers of History
The Čopova rojstna hiša has been open to the public since December 1994. Today, it serves as a museum and event venue, as well as the headquarters of the Žirovnica Institute for Tourism and Culture. It is also the tourist information centre for Žirovnica. The house contains the Matija Čop memorial room and the Ajdna museum room.
In Vrba, the Prešernova rojstna hiša was declared a monument of national importance in 2011. The restored museum complex includes a central exhibition on the poet’s life and work, a hall for cultural events, and a museum shop. As visitor offerings may change, it is advisable to check exhibition and event details before your visit. Also in Vrba is the branch church of St Mark, first mentioned in 1468, which brings together Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements.
Another cultural heritage route runs through the cultural landscape of Studenčice. There, more than 4.5 kilometres of the Cesarska cesta have been preserved in their original form; it is considered an important landscape monument and a heritage trail. In Doslovče, the Finžgarjeva domačija, together with its hayrack and barn, has been preserved as an open-air museum. Each place has its own character, showcasing historic architecture, the memory of a poet and preserved landscape features.
Circular Routes, Hiking and Cycling
The Pot kulturne dediščine Žirovnica is a ten-kilometre circular route. Signposts mark it in both directions, and it can be explored on foot, by bicycle, by car or by bus. This distinguishes it from the longer sections of the Juliana Trail: the trail passes through Žirovnica, and its third stage begins in Jesenice, crosses the Dobravško polje and the Sava Dolinka, and continues into the villages below Stol. There, the stage follows the Pot kulturne dediščine Žirovnica for most of the way.
There are also cycling routes with different characters. The Žirovnica E5 stage of the Juliana Bike runs from TIC Žirovnica into the Završnica Valley. The Žirovnica–Valvasorjev dom–Žirovnica circular cycling route is a mountain biking tour below Stol. Those looking for a lowland loop with a cultural focus can choose the Žirovnica–Begunje na Gorenjskem–Žirovnica tour, which lets visitors explore cultural heritage.
Another mountain biking loop runs via Smokuški vrh and the car park below Tinčkova koča, returning to Žirovnica. It passes through unspoilt nature and includes two high points. These options can be distinguished by route type: circular and lowland routes sit alongside mountain biking routes and a long-distance hiking trail. No walking or cycling times are given for these tours here, so plan your day’s stages according to your own schedule.
Views and the History of Technology
Ajdna is a Late Antiquity archaeological site on the southern side of Stol. The summit can only be reached on foot; check trail conditions before setting out. When visibility is good, views from Ajdna extend to the Julian Alps and Lake Bled. Weather and visibility are therefore important considerations when planning a visit to this viewpoint.
The history of hydropower is also present at several named sites. Above Žirovnica, Vodostan was built in 1914 to supply the Završnica hydroelectric power plant and, later, the Moste hydroelectric power plant; it is also a viewpoint. The Završnica hydroelectric power plant has now been converted into a technology museum. Visitors can learn about generating electricity from water and compare historic equipment with modern equipment from the Moste hydroelectric power plant. Visits are available by appointment.
The Janšev čebelnjak offers another experience available by appointment: guided visits and tastings of products from the beehive can be arranged in advance. Please arrange your visit ahead of time.
