The Karst Forest Educational Trail begins at the Zgornje Lome/Spodnje Lome crossroads. This easy circular route passes through an autochthonous fir-beech forest. Lome also has a cultural history associated with Matej Cigale and Domačija Tominc. This gives you two distinct focuses for planning your trip: nature and historical connections.

Karst Landscape Along the Circular Trail

Several distinct karst features can be seen along the Karst Forest Educational Trail. Numerous sinkholes are visible along the route; near Spodnje Lome there is a limestone pavement, and fossilised remains of rudist shells can be seen in the Lower Cretaceous limestone. The forest is also part of the experience: the route passes through an autochthonous fir-beech forest. After about 300 metres through the forest, you reach Hrvat Cave.

The trail can also be cycled. It can be extended to the High Karst Trail and is connected to the Matuckar Trail in Zadlog. These distinctions are useful when choosing a route: the High Karst Trail is a possible extension, while the Matuckar Trail is connected to it. This helps you understand two different links to other trails without treating them as the same route.

Cultural History Connected to the Area

Domačija Tominc in Lome is part of the architectural heritage. Matej Cigale was born in Lome and edited an extensive German-Slovenian dictionary in 1860. In 1880, he compiled a German-Slovenian terminology dictionary. The two dates refer to different works and give his connection to Lome a specific linguistic-historical context.

In 1894, a memorial plaque to Matej Cigale was placed on his parents’ house in nearby Dolnjih Lomeh. This memorial site in Dolnjih Lomeh adds to the connection between his birthplace, Lome, and his work. An ethnographic entry dated August 1, 1959, also links an apiary near Lome 8 in Pri Kašc with the beekeeper Frančiška Tominc. This historical connection forms a separate thread alongside Cigale’s biography and the architectural heritage.

Getting There and the Surrounding Area

From Ljubljana, travel via the exit for Lome, then continue for about 500 metres along a side road to the Spodnje Lome/Zgornje Lome crossroads. The trail also starts there. This shared reference point is useful if the circular trail is the main focus of your stay: the directions and starting point refer to the same place.

For a different perspective on the landscape, visit the observation tower on Javornik near Lome. Rising above the treetops, it offers views of the Dolomites, the Carnic and Julian Alps, the Karawanks, the Kamnik-Savinja Alps and Mount Snežnik. Unlike the karst features along the trail, the focus here is on views of these mountain ranges and Mount Snežnik.

The Javornik Ski Centre lists Lome 10 as its contact address. The ski area is currently closed; its slopes are suitable for beginners and highly advanced skiers. The terrain and operating status answer different planning questions: suitability describes the slopes, while the current status describes ski operations. Check the seasonal operating status before travelling.
