Cerkno brings together a variety of discoveries: the Cerkljanska Laufarija and its masks, exhibitions on regional history, seasonal offerings at the ski centre and activities in the surrounding hills. What suits your stay therefore also depends on whether you want to focus on culture, winter activities or summer pursuits.

Laufarija, Museum and Music

The Cerkljanski muzej is housed in the former local courthouse. Two permanent exhibitions explore different subjects: “Cerkljanska skozi stoletja” covers the region through the centuries, while “Pust je kriv!” is about the Cerkljan Laufarji. In the second exhibition, you can see reconstructions of the clothing and props for all 25 characters in the Laufar family. This lets you explore the custom and its representation in the museum, while the Cerkljanska Laufarija itself takes place every year in the market square in Cerkno.

The Laufarija features 25 characters, and the tradition includes 26 masks carved from lime wood. During the ceremony, Pust is sentenced to death with a wooden lumberjack’s mallet. The custom has been listed in Slovenia’s Register of Intangible Cultural Heritage since February 2012 and was declared intangible cultural heritage of national importance by a government decree in 2014. If you want to plan your trip around the event, check the date in advance.

Jazz Cerkno also shapes the events calendar: the festival has been held every year since 1996 in mid-May at “star plac,” a square in the centre covered with a purpose-built roof. The programme brings together jazz, rock, electronic, new and classical music, experimental music and traditional musical forms. The exact event dates may vary, so take this into account when planning.

Guided Walk and Memorial Site

“Zgodbe cerkljanskih hiš” is a guided walk through Cerkno from house to house. The tour also leads to the Brdce viewpoint, where visitors learn about the events that took place in Cerkno in 1944. Groups may need to arrange their visit in advance.

Partizanska bolnica Franja, a Second World War hospital and memorial site, lies in the Pasice Gorge near Dolenji Novaki, close to Cerkno. The visitor website currently lists the site as closed until further notice while damage from the floods of 13 July 2023 is being repaired. Check its status before planning a visit.

Winter Activities and Routes Around Cerkno

Cerkno Ski Centre has 18 kilometres of groomed pistes, including challenging slopes for experienced skiers, runs for relaxed skiing and a practice area for beginners. The ski school offers children and adults lessons in skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing. As operations are seasonal, check the ski centre’s latest information before your trip.

In summer, the rounded hilltops around Cerkno attract hikers and cyclists. E-mountain bike tours make it easier to ride uphill and along steep, less paved trails, and are suitable for both occasional and regular cyclists. Nine electric MTB SCOTT Aspect ERide 40 mountain bikes are available to rent in Cerkno. As the rental fleet may change, check availability in advance.

One specific route is Route No. 2: it starts in the centre of Cerkno and includes a 2.5-kilometre climb with views of the surrounding hills. Check trail conditions before setting off.

Regional Cuisine

Culinary names also offer a glimpse into the wider cultural area. Idrijski žlikrofi are made according to a traditional recipe in the Idrija and Cerkno area. Pajtičke are a savoury onion potica characteristic of Cerkljansko and are among the representative dishes of the Idrija-Cerkno gastronomic region. Both specialities can therefore be understood as regional, rather than being attributed to Cerkno alone.
