Church architecture, archaeological traces and waterways give Runarsko a range of themes to explore during a stay. You can learn about the church’s history and earlier remains, or distinguish the Runarščica and Bloščica by their springs and courses.

Cultural heritage in Runarsko

The Church of the Nativity of Mary in Runarsko was built after 1700. It burned down in 1834 after being struck by lightning and was restored in 1870. That same year, Anton Kušlan from Novo mesto made the wooden high altar. The chronology shows the construction, fire and restoration as distinct stages. The church is part of the built cultural heritage.

The Tabor Archaeological Site in Runarsko is part of the archaeological heritage. A watchtower stood on Stari grad at Taboršče. The Roman defensive wall along the ancient road between Velike Lašče and Runarsko was part of the Roman defensive complex Claustra Alpium Iuliarum. These heritage designations offer two different perspectives: the church is a building, while Tabor is an archaeological site. The watchtower and defensive wall provide further historical traces.

A visible section of the wall

A section of the wall, about 300 metres long, is visible beside the road between Runarsko and Novi Pot; an information board stands next to it. Before visiting, check local access and whether the section is visible.

Springs and waterways

The two waterways are associated with different landscape features: for the Runarščica, the focus is on its course from source to mouth; for the Bloščica’s spring-fed streams, the source area and underlying geology are important. The Runarščica rises below Paslovec and flows into the Blatni potok at Ograde. The spring-fed streams of the Bloščica rise between Zakraj and Runarsko on impermeable dolomite.

Routes and activities

Three activities differ in how you travel and the route they follow. The 37-kilometre circular route of the Magdalena-Gornik Pilgrimage Route can be travelled by car, bicycle or on foot. A run starts at Bloško jezero and follows flat paths through the Bloščica stream’s lowland marsh towards Runarsko and back. The Konjeniško društvo Divji konji riding club at Runarsko 8 organises an annual horse ride through Bloke and the surrounding area.

Each activity offers different points of reference: the pilgrimage route is defined by its length and mode of travel; the run by its starting point, terrain and direction; and the horse ride by the organising club and area. This can help you choose what kind of activity to include in your stay.

If you are looking for accommodation in Runarsko, first decide whether local history, waterways or an activity will be the focus of your trip. Activities vary in route length, mode of travel and terrain. Plan around what matters most for your trip.
