Stari Trg Pri Ložu reveals itself through traces of its architectural and settlement history: the Parish Church of St. George, two unusual masonry wells, and archaeological finds at Ulaka and near Gradišče. The subjects span from the first written mention in 1221 to prehistoric settlement. This gives you the opportunity to explore different historical aspects of the place.

Parish Church of St. George: Building History and Frescoes

The Parish Church of St. George has a Romanesque, three-aisled layout and was first mentioned in writing in 1221. The year marks the first written mention, not necessarily the start of construction. In the mid-18th century, the church was remodelled in the Baroque style. As a pilgrimage church, it is also an important religious landmark in the town.

During major renovations around 1761, vaults were added to the church’s naves. Old frescoes from this period have been preserved, extending across the entire attic wall. The freestanding bell tower also reflects another function of the complex: during the Ottoman incursions, it served as a fortress. Architecture, pilgrimage and the history of defence are distinct chapters in the story of the same architectural ensemble.

Masonry Wells with a Special Mechanism

Two masonry wells dating from the late 19th century have a rocking mechanism with a counterweight. They are the only examples of their kind in Slovenia and are considered exceptional technical heritage. These wells are notable not only for their masonry construction but also for their distinctive design. One is located on the main road at the entrance to Stari Trg Pri Ložu.

The wells add a technical dimension to the architectural and religious history of the parish church. Their status as unique examples of their kind makes them a subject of interest in their own right for anyone interested in historic engineering.

Ulaka and Gradišče: Archaeological Traces

The hill of Ulaka above Stari Trg Pri Ložu was settled as early as prehistoric times. Large defensive ramparts have been preserved on its northern and eastern sides. Excavations uncovered rows of house remains and a smithy; the finds point to a well-developed tradition of blacksmithing. Settlement traces and defensive ramparts offer different ways to explore the history of the hill.

Another archaeological area lies near Gradišče in Stari Trg Pri Ložu. The finds there are interpreted either as a fortified late Roman country estate or as a late antique fortified rural villa with a portico. Excavations uncovered a defensive rampart and the remains of towers at three corners. The two possible interpretations remain alternative readings.
