A marked mountain hiking trail starts in Cerknica, and the town preserves a historic Tabor complex. There is also birdwatching at Lake Cerknica and activities for museum and culture enthusiasts. If you are looking for accommodation in Cerknica, you can plan your stay around hiking, nature watching or local history.
Hiking and nature watching
The marked mountain hiking trail to Slivnica starts at the bowling alley in Cerknica. The Slivnica Trail offers views of the Javorniki Hills and Lake Cerknica. Witch Cave lies below the summit. According to local tradition, witches brewed up storms and natural disasters there—a story that adds another, legendary dimension to the landscape.
The Drvošec Trail is 3.7 km long one way, running from the Rešeto sinkholes to a point about 500 m before the bridge in front of the village of Otok. The 10 m-high Otočec observation tower stands along the trail. At the Kuharca viewing platform, blind and visually impaired visitors can explore adapted educational stations featuring descriptions in Braille and tactile and audio activities.
Access to the natural areas of Notranjska Regional Park is free. Guided experiences and centres are separate offerings. For birdwatching at Lake Cerknica, participants can borrow binoculars free of charge before the walk begins. A guided birdwatching excursion starts at the Museum of Lake Cerknica in the village of Dolenje Jezero and continues with an ornithologist.
There is also a specific route description for a bike ride: the Kosec cycling route runs along the foot of Slivnica above Martinjak and reaches Cerknica after about 4 km. The Carthusian Trail, in turn, passes through Cerknica and over a bridge to the anti-Ottoman Tabor. These offer different ways to explore, alongside routes that also lead to a historic destination.
Historic centre and cultural activities
The historic centre is defined by a square with a church, which developed around former anti-Ottoman Tabor fortifications. The Tabor complex is considered one of the largest and most heavily fortified in Slovenia; its remains are among the best preserved in the country. Within the surviving stone walls stands JurÄŤkov Tabor, a defensive tower. The church in Cerknica is first mentioned in written sources in 1265.
The town’s history also includes its former crafts. A document dated 28 January 1630 attests to a highly developed shoemaking trade in Cerknica. The shoemakers were organised in the Brotherhood of Saint Anne, which existed until 1922 and also became an independent guild. A statue of Krpan also stands in the centre as a symbol of survival.
At carnival time, a recurring tradition shapes the town: every year, Pustno društvo Cerknica takes over Cerknica and transforms it into Butale. Large and small carnival figures and masks parade through the streets of Cerknica, or Butale. If you would like to experience this tradition during your trip, check the specific event dates in advance.
There are different ways to learn about the lake through museums. The Jezerski hram Museum features a living model of Cerkniško jezero and an ethnological collection. The Museum of Lake Cerknica combines scientific explanations, folk traditions and multimedia storytelling. Kulturni dom Cerknica screens high-quality films for children and young people, which can be accompanied by discussions with a film education coordinator. The venue also runs film education programmes for kindergartens, primary schools and secondary schools.
