Settlement traces from the earlier phase of the Neolithic period were discovered at the Niže cesty site. They are attributed to the Lengyel culture and dated to around 3500 BC. The faint pottery sherds found at Topoľové date broadly to the late Neolithic or the Eneolithic. The two sites provide different kinds of archaeological evidence and have been dated with differing degrees of precision. Much later, Veľké Orvište appears for the first time in the Zobor Charter of 1113, under the name villa Rivvis.

Churches and Building History

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built in 1743. The single-nave building was extended and enlarged in 1940 with an addition on a square plan. The two dates mark separate phases of construction: the original building, followed almost two centuries later by the extension. The church stands at the crossroads of the roads to Ostrov and Bašovce, by the Barina stream in the local cemetery grounds.

The Evangelical bell tower has a different building history. It was built in 1934 from stones taken from an old Evangelical church that had been demolished and brought from Vrbové. The 50-kilogram bell, made by R. Manoušek of Brno, had already been solemnly consecrated on 15 August 1933. The bell and bell tower thus bring together two closely spaced but distinct dates: the consecration and the construction.

Monuments and crosses also bear specific years. The Pietà monument stands on the road to Bašovce; it dates from 1942 and was restored in 2009. The Holy Family monument on the road towards Ostrov, also known as Malé Orvište, bears the year 1913. The Holy Trinity monument, dated 1941, commemorates an earlier road to Piešťany. The cemetery cross, from 1926, originally stood at the Dlhé stavanie field outside the built-up area. Together, these details show different forms of local remembrance: buildings, roadside monuments and a cross with a former location.

Water and Landscape

Veľké Orvište lies at the transition between the northern tip of the Danubian Lowland and the northern part of the Trnava Hills. The Dubová stream flows through the area. The man-made Orvištský Canal also lies here. The waterways differ in how they were formed: one is a stream, the other a constructed canal. For you, this contrast offers a tangible way to connect with the local landscape, without suggesting that the two waterways are the same kind of natural feature.

Fishing, Sport and Community Life

The Záhumnie Fishing Club offers sport fishing not only to its members but also to the general public. In 2024, the 14th edition of the Jarný pstruh trout spinning competition was held at Záhumnie Pond. The previous year saw the 13th edition of Orviťský blyskáč, also a trout spinning competition. The Mikulášsky blyskáč is also described as a mixed-pair competition for 2023. The names and years offer a glimpse of different fishing competitions; if you are planning to attend an event, check the dates in advance.

Another sports facility is the 36 × 18-metre multi-purpose playing field. It was built in 2009; in 2018, its surface was changed to artificial turf, and the field was used for football training. Behind the cultural centre is a maintenance-free children’s playground that provides a safe play environment, supports children’s physical activity and social skills, and also allows for community gatherings.

Local events add to this picture. The programme of the seventh BOVO Olympics in 2023 included a goulash-cooking competition, with nine teams taking part. Orvištské hody includes a festive Mass on Sunday. These examples bring people together for different reasons: one centres on a cooking competition, the other on the religious part of the celebration.

The historical seal of Veľké Orvište bears the year 1784 and depicts a dove with a branch in its beak. It is another marker of the village’s history, alongside the archaeological sites and dated buildings. Veľké Orvište can thus be discovered through several themes: early settlement traces, the history of churches and monuments, waterways, and sport fishing open to the public.
