A silver coin from the Roman Empire and archaeological finds from the Neolithic period, dating to around 7000 BC, open two windows onto widely separated eras in Špačince. They are joined by churches, statues and a manor house with a history spanning the Middle Ages to the 19th century. As you explore the town, you encounter its past in a wide variety of buildings and artefacts.
Church, Calvary and historic landmarks
The Roman Catholic church is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It was built in 1312 and was originally Gothic; its feast day is 8 September. The Špačince hody are also linked to this calendar date: they take place on the Sunday after the feast. Traditional foods include roast goose. If you would like to make this local tradition the occasion for a trip, check the dates for the year in question.
The Calvary complex dates from 1797 and features a Baroque cross. Fourteen stations were erected there in 1873. The two dates bring the complex’s development over time into focus: 76 years separate its origins from the erection of the stations.
The dates on the cemetery also tell different chapters of the story. It is home to a statue of the Holy Trinity from 1717 and a statue of Saint Vendelin from 1807. The two dates are 90 years apart. The old Jewish cemetery contains the chapel with the crypt of the Schwertner family and its complete enclosure.
The statue of Christ the King, dating from 1678, stands on the road to Trnava. It was erected by Pavol Orban and brought from Lišov in the Krupina District. The statue has survived to this day and is protected by the Monuments Board. The manor house at 270 Kaštieľska Street offers a different architectural impression: the single-storey Classical building dates from the first half of the 19th century. Špačince had already been granted town and market rights in 1699.
Landscape and educational trail
Špačince lies in the northern part of the Trnava Hills, in a flat, broad valley of the Krupanský potok. The protected CHVÚ Špačinsko-nižnianské polia bird sanctuary, which extends across the cadastral area, is also part of the surrounding landscape. Among other things, it protects the habitats of the saker falcon. The town’s story therefore extends beyond its buildings: the landscape and protected habitats also shape the character of the area.
The Chotárom Špačiniec educational trail brings together a range of topics across five information boards. They cover the history and present of Špačince, archaeology and monuments, wildlife and plant life, and local features. The route thus combines local history with nature, rather than focusing on a single era. If you plan to follow the trail, check the condition of the signs locally.
A cycling route is also being built in the cadastral area of Špačince as part of the project “Cyklistické prepojenie obcí Trnava – Bohdanovce nad Trnavou – Špačince – I. etapa”. If you plan to ride the route, check beforehand whether it has been completed and signposted.
Traditions and local meeting places
The Špačinský trojuholník run has been held every summer without interruption since 1978. The specific dates each year may be important for your plans, so check the dates for the year in question. Together with the Špačince hody, the run offers another occasion centred on local traditions—one sporting, the other also shaped by food.
The Špačince playground has a sandpit, numerous safe play features, climbing equipment and slides. It is close to the cultural centre, with the Krupský potok flowing along one side. The facilities may change, so it is advisable to check their condition before your visit.
