A small stone grotto with a spring and a relief of Neptune: a distinctive feature of Hlohovec can be found in Zámocký Park. Other topics to explore include the history of the castle, astronomy and protected nature. Hlohovec lies at the foot of the Považský Inovec Mountains, and the Váh flows through the town. A trip to Hlohovec District therefore offers a range of interests—from architecture and views to landscapes and nature.

Castle History and Architecture

Hlohovec Castle was originally built as a medieval castle in the 13th century. A reconstructed section of the castle building was reopened to the public in autumn 2018. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.

The refectory of the Franciscan monastery is also worth a look for its architectural history: it has a Renaissance-Baroque stucco ceiling dating from 1648 and an exhibition of historical furniture. The room’s design and its historic furnishings offer two distinct aspects to appreciate.

Walking Routes and Views

The Zámocký poznávací okruh is a walking trail with five stops and a length of approximately 2.6 km. The Šulekovský poznávací okruh, by contrast, is a circular route through Šulekovo. At approximately 2.9 km, it covers the history, flora and fauna of the Váh region. These details allow for a direct comparison: the Zámocký route is shorter and has one more stop; the Šulekovský route combines its circular walk with themes of the Váh region.

The Šianec viewpoint offers panoramic views across the Dolnovážska Lowland to the Little Carpathians. It can be reached on foot from the Empírové divadlo; by car, take Road II/507 towards Bojničky. Road conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Protected Nature near Hlohovec

The Sedliská Nature Reserve near Hlohovec protects xerothermic, steppe-like vegetation with numerous large-flowered pasqueflowers and is part of the European Natura 2000 network of protected areas. It is managed by the Little Carpathians Protected Landscape Area Administration and is subject to the fourth level of protection. Protected animals recorded there include the green lizard, Aesculapian snake, stag beetle and praying mantis. Sedliská offers a different focus from the castle and monastery: the emphasis is on a protected habitat with plant and animal species.

Stargazing and Local Events

The Hlohovec Observatory has the second-largest telescope in Slovakia. It offers stargazing and projections featuring simulations of movements in the night sky. Facilities and programmes may change, so check current offerings before your visit.

Fraštacké putovanie za vínom also offers a dated glimpse into local events: 48 wineries took part in the 17th edition on 26 April 2025, and 1,600 guests attended.
