Two interests provide a clear direction when choosing Veľké Orvište: local history surrounding the Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and leisure activities at Záhumnie Pond. The church’s construction details and archaeological finds tell of different eras; at the pond, recreation and sport fishing take centre stage. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can decide whether cultural history or activities by the water should shape your stay.

Church and Historical Traces

The Church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary stands at a road junction in Barina, within the grounds of the local cemetery. The roads lead towards Ostrov and Bašovce. According to the available information, the church was built in 1743. The single-nave building has a flat ceiling and a semicircular presbytery. In 1940, it was extended and enlarged with an annex with a square floor plan. These details distinguish the church’s original construction from its later extension as two separate building phases.

The bell tower was built in 1934 using stone from a demolished Protestant church; the material had been brought from Vrbové. The tower was restored in 2009. The 50-kilogram bell was made by R. Manoušek of Brno and donated to the Protestant congregation. Another historical detail is the epitaph of the late Baron František Trauttmansdorff, which was restored in 2012.

The history of settlement goes back further than the church buildings. The earliest settlement identified in the cadastral area of Veľké Orvište was at the Niže cesty archaeological site. It belongs to the Lengyel culture and dates to around 3500 BC. Another archaeological find comes from a much later period: a hoard of four gold coins and 78 silver coins, buried in the 17th century, was discovered in the cadastral area. Together, these finds point to different periods in the area’s history, from an early settlement to a coin hoard hidden much later.

Recreation and Sport Fishing at Záhumnie Pond

The recreational and leisure zone in the cadastral area of Veľké Orvište is part of the local Záhumnie Pond. It offers visitors opportunities for relaxation and active recreation, and is used by residents of the municipality as well as guests from the surrounding area. Záhumnie Lake is a still-water body covering two hectares, with a depth of between 0.8 and 1.8 metres. Its area and depth range give the body of water a distinct profile, while its recreational use brings together different interests by the water.

The Záhumnie Association also allows non-members to go sport fishing; participation is subject to the association’s rules. One specific, dated fishing event was the “Jarný pstruh XVI. ročník” competition: RZ Záhumnie Veľké Orvište held it on 21 and 22 March 2026 as a spinning competition for trout. This event connects the location with a specific type of fishing and a clearly stated timeframe.

Coming from Piešťany, you can reach the fishing area at RZ Záhumnie Lake by turning right behind the church towards Pobedím. This makes it possible to use the church as a historical landmark when finding the fishing area, while choosing to focus your stay either on local history or on recreation at the pond.
