In Trnovec, a river landscape meets a long local history. The Chvojnica flows through the cadastral area; its floodplain forms the lowest-lying part of the municipality. Trnovec also lies on the boundary between the Dolnomoravský úval and the Chvojnická pahorkatina. These geographical features give an exploration of the area a clear direction: first the landscape and its protected areas, then the traces of different eras and local traditions.

The Chvojnica and its landscape

The Chvojnica Natural Monument also includes the cadastral area of Trnovec. Protection levels 4 and 5 apply to the protected area, which partly overlaps with the White Carpathians Protected Landscape Area. Together with the Chvojnica floodplain and its location between two geomorphological units, this reveals a landscape that cannot be described solely in terms of the village centre. The river belongs to the Morava River basin.

If you are interested in nature and landscape conservation, these connections can serve as a thread for exploring Trnovec. The river, its catchment area and the designated protected areas are distinct geographical aspects: the Chvojnica shapes the cadastral area, while the boundaries of the protected areas indicate broader spatial connections.

From early settlement to architectural history

The history of the area dates back to a Slavic settlement that existed in the cadastral area in the 8th and 9th centuries. A later turning point came in 1548, when Croats settled in Trnovec and it became part of the Holíč estate. The two dates refer to distinctly different chapters in the area's history and need not be combined into a single narrative.

The buildings also tell of the living conditions of earlier times. In the 18th century, houses in Trnovec were built from clay and unfired bricks to reduce the risk of fire. The area's history also includes a villein mill that once stood in the cadastral area and a former seigneurial brickworks in Trnovec. Bricks, sewer pipes and roof tiles were made there. This makes it possible to view residential construction and production as two distinct aspects of local architectural history.

Churches and local culture

The Church of Our Lady of the Rosary in Trnovec was built in 1871 in the Neoclassical style. The single-nave building has three bays of a Prussian vault. It is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. If you plan to visit the church, it is best to check access locally in advance.

Local craftsmanship is also part of the cultural picture: examples of embroidery from Trnovec can be seen in the village church and at the local handicrafts exhibition. Further afield, in Kopčany, stands the Church of St Margaret of Antioch. It is an almost completely preserved Great Moravian church from the 9th century and offers a distinct perspective on the region's cultural heritage.

Hiking route and carnival tradition

For hiking enthusiasts, the yellow-marked KST hiking route No. 8161 is a useful point of reference. It is 11.5 kilometres long, and the bridge in Trnovec is one of its landmarks. As route details may change with trail maintenance, check the current route and markings before setting out. A 2025 route description also lists the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows as the second stop, at kilometre 2.9. This sequence of stops and the kilometre mark refer to the route as described there.

Another way to explore the area is through its carnival traditions. The carnival tradition in Trnovec has been revived in recent years. Small trdelník pastries are part of local culinary tradition: in the past, they were baked over a fire on wooden rods during the carnival season. Other traditional foods include carnival doughnuts, sulz and Božie milosti, locally also called Fanky. If you plan to visit for a specific carnival event, check its date in advance.

Trnovec offers a variety of themes to consider when planning a trip: the Chvojnica and its floodplain, architectural and local history, churches and embroidery, as well as hiking and carnival traditions. Choose the focus that interests you most and include the route or cultural sites that suit your plans.
