Vozokany offers two distinct focuses for an exploratory trip: the 12.3-kilometre MTB recreational route 5221 and a church with a building history that dates back to a chapel from 1718. There are also monuments, roadside statues and a local festival tradition. You can shape your trip around cycling, sacred architecture or memorial sites.

MTB Route and Waterways

The green-marked Route 5221 is an easy MTB recreational route. It is 12.3 kilometres long and runs along asphalt, paved paths, and field and forest tracks. In Vozokany, it reaches the first footbridge over the Čierna Voda and then runs along the edge of the village towards Tomášikovo and Jahodná. Check the route status before setting off, as route information may change.

For orientation, it is worth distinguishing between the similar-sounding names: the Stará Čierna voda watercourse branches off downstream of Čierna Voda and flows through Vozokany. The route description, by contrast, places the crossing at a footbridge over the Čierna Voda. This makes it clear that the watercourse and the named route point are distinct.

The Baroque Church and Its Building History

The Roman Catholic Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1718 as a larger chapel. In 1778, a south aisle and a masonry tower were added; the tower replaced the original wooden one. The church received another aisle with its own entrance in 1923. Locally, this is called the “small church.” The nave and the side aisles have cross vaults. The construction dates therefore refer to several extensions, not just the origin of the building.

Two bronze bells from 1922 and 1925 hang in the tower. The smaller one bears a relief of the Virgin Mary. An organ positive was installed in the choir gallery in 1888. Beneath the church is a crypt built in 1718. It is not accessible today and contains three burials, including that of Captain György Ritter of Vozokany, who died in 1732.

The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose. Check access arrangements locally before visiting. This distinguishes a visit to the church from the historical details that are part of the village’s history even without access to the crypt.

Monuments and Local Memories

The Roman Catholic Chapel of Saint John of Nepomuk stands in the local cemetery. It was built in 1925 as a memorial to the victims of the First World War. The monument to those who fell in the First and Second World Wars commemorates local heroes who died in both wars. The two memorial sites represent different forms of commemoration: a chapel with an explicitly stated dedication and a monument to those who fell in both world wars.

Individual statues and crosses are also among the named sights. The statue of the Holy Family was erected in 1908 by Nagy Ferencz and Nagy Anna. A year later, Tönköly Dávid and Klimek Anna erected the Nagykereszt, or Great Cross; a statue of the Virgin Mary stands on its plinth. Beside the Catholic church is the Kopjafa, a local monument erected in 2014 under the direction of woodcarver Tibor Szatmár.

Another work by the same woodcarver is the Család Tábor életfája: participants in a family camp carved this Tree of Life in 2013 under his direction. The roadside statues include Saint Vendelín at the end of the village towards Tomášikovo, Saint John of Nepomuk by the bridge and Saint Florian in the park in front of the church. The precise locations help distinguish these individual religious landmarks.

Hody as a Possible Reason to Visit

Hody celebrations take place in Vozokany on the feast day of the church’s patron saint. If you want to plan your trip around them, check the exact date in advance. This lets you choose between focusing on the cycling route, the church and monuments, or the Hody celebrations, without planning your trip around an unconfirmed event date.
