Pusté Úľany combines a landscape rich in waterways with a layered architectural history. The surrounding area offers opportunities for activities on the water, while churches, chapels and monuments tell stories of different eras. This gives you two main themes to plan your trip around: activities in the landscape and a look at historic buildings.

Water and floodplains

The local water system includes six ponds, three streams and three irrigation canals. The Čierna voda forms the southern boundary of the cadastral area of Pusté Úľany. Its old meanders, or oxbow lakes, riverside vegetation, wetlands, meadows, and stands of willow and poplar shape the landscape along this edge of the cadastral area.

Fishing is possible on several streams and ponds around Pusté Úľany; the local bodies of water also offer opportunities for swimming in natural surroundings. In the winter months, the local ponds serve as natural skating rinks. The local floodplain forests are suitable for hiking; the surrounding area is suitable for cycling, and the floodplain landscape is ideal for birdwatching.

Critically endangered and endangered plants, as well as other highly threatened species, occur in the area of Pusté Úľany. The landscape therefore draws attention not only to its waterways and floodplains but also to its plant life.

Architecture and history

Near the centre stands the manor house, with a seven-bay main façade and a three-bay, raised risalit. The number of bays describes the layout of the façade; the risalit is another distinctive feature, projecting above the façade. The Baroque roadside statues of Saint John of Nepomuk and Saint Florian were commissioned in 1734 by Gašpar Farkaš and his wife Magda Baloghová. At the upper end of the village stands a column with a group of figures representing the Holy Trinity; it was probably erected in 1903 by the Marcell family.

A monument to the fallen of the First World War stands in the park in front of the Roman Catholic church. It was erected in 1941 and incorporates a fragment of an old Baroque column. The Church of Saint Ladislaus is near the centre, west of the road to Pavlice on Pavlická ulica; its organ dates from 1898 and has one manual, eight stops and a pedal.

The Baroque Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was built in 1742. Its vaults are decorated with a Baroque depiction of an open sky and two floating angels. The Neo-Gothic Chapel of Saint Joseph dates from 1866 and contains a polychrome statue of the saint. The vault painting and the statue are two distinct decorative features of the chapels.

The Protestant church was originally a Renaissance church, was mentioned as an Articular church in 1660 and was rebuilt in the Neoclassical style after a fire in 1820. It stands in the southwest of Pusté Úľany on the so-called Luther Hill. Its sequence of Renaissance origins, mention as an Articular church and Neoclassical reconstruction differs from the Baroque and Neo-Gothic details of the chapels.
