Matúškovo combines the flat landscape of the Podunajská nížina with churches, historic buildings and a cycling route that passes through the town. It is also home to an ethnographic exhibition in the Dom ľudového bývania. This offers several ways to get to know the town: the buildings reflect different periods in its history, while the exhibition focuses on the everyday lives and way of life of earlier population groups.

River Landscape and Lowlands

Matúškovo lies in the flat Podunajská nížina in southwestern Slovakia, near the Váh River. The Šárd stream flows through the town. The lowland, proximity to the river and the stream define its geographical setting; the named buildings and the exhibition provide specific points of interest for exploring its cultural history.

Churches and Architectural History

The Roman Catholic Church of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is a Baroque-Classical building. It was built between 1781 and 1784 on the site of an older church. Inside is an altarpiece depicting the Nativity of Mary, painted by Than Mór in 1871. There is also a 19th-century Classical side altar and a pulpit decorated with reliefs of the Evangelists.

The rectory, built in 1774 and considered Matúškovo’s oldest building, stands opposite the Roman Catholic church. The Evangelical church adds another chapter to the town’s history: it was designed by Ing. arch. Vavrinec Perleczky and solemnly opened in 1992. The different dates of construction and details of the churches and their surroundings provide their own historical points of reference.

Folk Architecture and Everyday History

The Dom ľudového bývania building was constructed in 1847 and is a listed example of traditional folk architecture in southwestern Slovakia. Its ethnographic exhibition opened to the public in 1984. It shows the way of life of the original population at the turn of the 20th century, as well as that of Slovaks who migrated from Dolná zem in 1947. Visitors can see richly decorated furniture, handwoven rugs and other objects from everyday life.

The exhibition complements the religious buildings with a different perspective, focusing on homes and everyday objects. For travellers interested in culture, it offers a change of pace between architecture, religious furnishings and depictions of earlier ways of life.

Monuments and Cultural Events

A stone column dedicated to the Holy Trinity stands in the village square; it was commissioned by František Lenárt in 1851. On the road towards Diakovce is a stone folk-style statue of Saint Vendelín dating from the second half of the 19th century. It depicts the patron saint of domestic animals. The cultural monument Božia muka dates from the first half of the 19th century. Its column shrine has a pointed-arch opening and is topped with a double cross.

The town’s cultural life also includes the traditional “Stretnutie hudobníkov”, regularly held by the youth organisation at the stadium in Matúškovo. If you would like to include the event in your travel plans, check the specific date for your travel period.

Cycling Route Through Matúškovo

The “Po stopách vodných mlynov” cycling route, also known as the “Galantský Cyklookruh”, passes through Matúškovo. The full route is 64 kilometres long and is numbered 2210. As the route data is maintained collaboratively, check the route and its continuity before setting off. This will help you factor the route and its total distance into your plans.
