Mojtín combines a protected cave with hiking and cycling trails, as well as seasonal skiing and cross-country skiing. When searching for a holiday apartment, your preferred focus is a useful first filter: would you like to focus on cave history, a hiking or cycling route, or winter sports?

Cave, protected area and local history

The Mojtínska priepastná jaskyňa is a protected natural monument located within the cadastral area of the municipality of Mojtín. It is 503 metres long and 108 metres deep. Its history is closely connected to the village, too: for five years, until the church school was consecrated in 1860, the Mojtínska jaskyňa served as a natural church.

In 2005, the path to the cave was made accessible and renovated; a statue of Saint Joseph was placed inside the cave. A blue-marked trail towards Riedka leads to the cave, followed by a signposted turn-off and a short forest path.

The village’s history also includes the parish church of Saints Cyril and Methodius, built in 1863, and a memorial plaque to Ladislav Škultéty–Gábriš. Above the plaque is a bronze equestrian depiction. The dates refer to different events: 1860 marks the consecration of the church school, and 1863 the construction of the parish church.

Hiking and cycling

Mojtín lies in the Strážovské vrchy Protected Landscape Area. Most of Route 5313 also passes through this protected area. The easy recreational MTB route runs from Čelkova Lehota via Riedka to Mojtín. It is 14.9 kilometres long, has an elevation difference of 360/270 metres, and ends near the local church. The route alternates between asphalt, paved paths and forest trails.

From Gombár, a district of Mojtín, a green-marked trail passes below the summit of Rakytník; a local path leads to a viewpoint. A green-marked hiking route also leads to Ostrá Malenica, at 909 metres above sea level. According to the map, the round trip takes more than three hours.

This information helps with different aspects of planning: for the MTB route, distance, elevation difference and surface are relevant; for Ostrá Malenica, the round-trip duration is the key consideration. Trail conditions can change—check them before setting out.

Winter sports and a place to rest

SKI Mojtín has downhill slopes on the northern slopes of Javorina, Veľký Grúň and Malý Grúň, catering to skiers with different levels of experience. The resort also offers a groomed cross-country ski trail, which starts and ends at Bufet Vŕšky. Winter sports are seasonal; operating details may change, and trail grooming can vary. Check current conditions before your visit.

Bufet Vŕšky offers refreshments, views of the surrounding natural landscape, and a place to rest after skiing or hiking. Opening is seasonal; check availability if you are planning to stop there.
