Beluša combines religious architecture and craft history with opportunities for hiking and cycling at the transition between the basin and the mountains. If you are looking for accommodation in Belusa, the area can be understood in terms of two distinct travel interests: cultural history in the town and nature experiences in Belušské Slatiny and the surrounding area.

Cultural history across different periods

The Chapel of Saints Fabian and Sebastian is a national cultural monument and is among Slovakia’s oldest surviving buildings. The Chapel of Saint Anne dates from the second half of the 13th century. Each offers a specific insight into Beluša’s religious history, with its own distinct historical context.

The Church of Saint Elizabeth of Hungary is also worth a look for its different historical periods: its interior was decorated in the Baroque style in the 18th century. The main altar features a painting by Jozef Božetech Klemens, created in 1879 to replace an earlier image, and it remains the altar’s focal point today.

The renovated Izba ľudových tradícií (Folk Traditions Room) is on the first floor of the Beluša Cultural Centre on Farská Street. It has been open to the public since 28 June 2015, by prior appointment; visitors therefore need to arrange a visit in advance. Another link to local history is the Beluša basket-weaving school: the first school of its kind in Slovakia, it took part in the 1900 World’s Fair in Paris.

The Hradište archaeological site is considered the most valuable evidence of settlement in the municipality of Beluša. Beluša’s Jewish cemetery contains 92 graves. Together, these places reveal different facets of history, from archaeological traces to crafts and religious heritage.

The Basin, Mountains and Trails

Beluša lies in the northern part of the Ilava Basin, where it meets the White Carpathians, the Javorníky Mountains and the Strážov Mountains. Belušské Slatiny offers year-round opportunities for recreation, hiking and cycling. The options therefore range from cultural sites to activities in the landscape.

The Cesta básnikov (Path of Poets) hiking trail runs through the picturesque Slatinská dolina valley and the surrounding forests. Since 2022, the project of the same name, initiated by OZ Art Belušské Slatiny, has enhanced the area with rest stops. Most are benches that connect visitors with people associated with the area.

Belušské vráta is a short rock gorge carved by the Slatinský stream into the limestone bedrock of the so-called Manín nappe complex. The gorge can be reached via a paved road leading from Belušské Slatiny towards the municipality of Mojtín. This makes a striking geological formation and a clearly described access route the main features of the visit.

Rohatá skala is a tourist attraction in the Strážov Mountains. From the summit, views extend northwest to west towards the Javorníky Mountains and the White Carpathians. This adds a viewpoint with a clearly defined outlook to the forest and gorge landscape.
