Veľká Čausa brings local history together with clearly defined cultural and natural themes: the Church of Saint Gorazd, protected lime trees and the Dúbravka folklore group. There are also leisure options such as mini golf, playgrounds and cycle paths. This lets you decide whether architectural history, local culture, nature or activities will take centre stage on your trip.
Location and historical traces
Veľká Čausa lies in the southeastern part of the Upper Nitra Basin, along the middle reaches of the Handlovka River. Settlement is believed to have begun in the 12th century; the village was first mentioned in writing in 1358. A deed of gift from 1430 lists Veľká Čausa under the historical name “Nagy Cheuche”. These dates mark different stages: the presumed beginning of settlement, the first written mention and a later documented form of the name. This keeps early settlement history distinct from the written record.
Church, chapel and remembrance
The foundation stone of the modern hall church dedicated to Saint Gorazd was blessed by Pope John Paul II in Vajnory on 22 April 1990. The church was consecrated on 30 May 1999. The dates mark two distinct stages in its construction: the blessing of the foundation stone and the subsequent consecration. As a hall church, it is characterised by a single, unified interior; it is also a branch church.
The chapel was enlarged for services during the church’s construction and fully renovated in 2015. The restored war grave of Jozef Počuch preserves the memory of a soldier who fell in the Slovak National Uprising. The church, chapel and war grave thus represent different aspects of local history: religious architecture, structural change and remembrance.
Natural monuments and public spaces
Two large-leaved lime trees stand in the cemetery; they were designated protected natural monuments in 1975. Their trunk circumferences are 353 and 441 centimetres, and the trees are 25 and 24 metres tall. Alongside the history of the church and village, the protected lime trees provide a distinct connection to nature.
A small market square has also been built in Veľká Čausa. Public areas have sports facilities with workout equipment and children’s playgrounds. These amenities complement the historic sites with practical facilities in the village’s public spaces.
Folklore, leisure and regional cuisine
The Dúbravka folklore group performs at cultural entertainment events in Veľká Čausa and elsewhere. This broadens the cultural picture beyond buildings and memorial sites to include performing arts.
The Koliba Pacho Resort has an 18-hole mini-golf course and an outdoor children’s playground. The Koliba Pacho restaurant in Veľká Čausa serves regional food and drinks. Mini golf and the playground are specific leisure facilities; regional cuisine is a separate culinary highlight. Facilities and restaurant offerings may change. If these details matter for your visit, check the latest information in advance.
The cycle paths from the Koliba Pacho Resort connect to other officially signposted cycling routes. Check the connections and local conditions before cycling. This will help you plan this part of your trip around the conditions on the routes.
