Poruba combines a national cultural monument with a long-standing tradition of climbing Magura. The Church of St Nicholas and the old mill give the village a cultural and historical focus; the ascent and regional folklore offer other reasons to visit. When planning, you can decide whether your trip should be shaped more by local history, customs or a specific mountain destination.

Church, cemetery and ancient lime trees

The Church of St Nicholas dates from the late 13th or early 14th century and is a national cultural monument. It is a rare example of a fortified medieval rural religious complex with a cemetery. The combination of church, fortifications and cemetery makes the complex a distinct feature of local history.

Eleven ancient lime trees stand near the enclosure, on both its inner and outer sides. They are estimated to be around 550 years old, and the trees are protected. Alongside the medieval architecture, protected trees are another focal point for the local history and nature.

The mill and traditional customs

The mill in Poruba is a two-storey building constructed mainly of wood. Its surviving equipment recalls the miller’s trade. It is one of two original mills that have survived in Poruba. It ceased operating in the 1950s or 1960s; today, it is an unused building that is partly inhabited. Its construction and surviving equipment add a craft-focused dimension to local history alongside the religious building.

Children’s Folklore Day is part of the recurring Zimné slávnosti Hornonitria programme and usually takes place in Poruba or Nedožery-Brezany. Its programme includes children’s games, rhymes, dances, songs, carnival customs, spring games, and other traditional customs and traditions. Its variety therefore extends beyond a single type of performance. If Children’s Folklore Day is a deciding factor in your trip, include its specific date in your plans.

The children’s folklore ensemble DFS Kapsiarik is also part of the cultural background: it was founded in 2003 at the Poruba municipal office and sought to revive the Morena procession and carnival traditions. While Children’s Folklore Day brings various customs together in one programme, the ensemble’s history centres on reviving them.

The traditional ascent of Magura

The traditional ascent of Magura by the municipalities has been held for almost two decades and brings hundreds of participants to the summit each year. The starting point is the Urbárska krčma in Poruba. The route from Poruba to Magura is about 6.8 kilometres long, with an elevation gain of 723 metres. For your own planning, it is worth considering both figures: distance and elevation gain describe different aspects of the climb.

There is also something for winter visitors: in the area around Prievidza, Poruba’s ski resort is among those sought out by tourists. Poruba also has a ranch with horses.

Choose the focus of your stay

If you are looking for an apartment in Poruba, you can plan your trip around the focus you want: the church, protected lime trees and mill represent local history; Children’s Folklore Day and the ascent of Magura each offer a distinct reason to visit. The ski resort adds a winter option.
