In Nitrianske Pravno’s main square, the old town hall stands out as the town’s distinctive and dominant building. Other sights include Calvary on Galgensberg Hill, the bell tower and local collections in Vyšehradné, as well as two activities with different formats: the Solka–Vyšehrad nature trail and a cycling route that starts and ends in Nitrianske Pravno. This gives you a range of options for planning your trip, from architectural history and religious heritage to activities with specific time or fitness requirements.

Architectural history and religious heritage

The old town hall is the distinctive building and the dominant structure in Nitrianske Pravno’s main square. The Roman Catholic parish church, dedicated to Saint John the Baptist, was originally a stone Gothic church. It was built in the first decades after the town was founded. These landmarks reflect different aspects of the townscape: the defining town hall on the square and a church whose dedication and Gothic origins reflect the town’s early architectural history.

A larger religious complex is Calvary on Galgensberg Hill. It comprises 27 religious buildings in the Neo-Gothic style. Fourteen Stations of the Cross chapels are linked by a winding path. The total number of buildings and the number of chapels refer to different parts of the ensemble. The upper part of Calvary offers views of the Upper Nitra Basin. The architecture, the Stations of the Cross and the views each add a distinct feature to this place to visit.

Vyšehradné: bell tower, collections and history

The wooden bell tower in Vyšehradné was built in 1802 and designated a national cultural monument in 1996. It is one of the oldest bell towers of its kind in Slovakia. The dates mark two different milestones: 1802, the year it was built, and 1996, when it was designated a cultural monument.

The Haronika House in Vyšehradné is home to a small museum about domestic life and traditional clothing, as well as the “Keramika Haronika” pottery workshop. The collection includes ceramic vessels, folk art objects made of metal, wood, leather and textiles, and old traditional costumes. Its themes range from domestic life and clothing to crafts and ceramics.

The Museum of the Carpathian Germans from Bratislava offers another historical perspective. Its permanent exhibition is titled “History and Culture of the Carpathian Germans in Hauerland”. Visits to the museum are possible by prior arrangement by phone. Please confirm the arrangements again before your visit.

Vyšehrad also preserves traces of the past: evidence of the earliest settlements from the Late Stone Age and Late Bronze Age, as well as traces of Slavic settlement, can be found there. These findings add an archaeological perspective on different periods of settlement to the themes of architecture and collections.

Nature trail and cycling route

The Solka–Vyšehrad nature trail is a circular route of about 8 km with a moderate difficulty level. It has 495 metres of elevation gain and takes about 3 to 4 hours at a walking pace. This makes it suitable as a multi-hour activity. The trail provides information about the history of the area and its local fauna and flora.

A cycling route starts in Nitrianske Pravno, goes via Tužina towards Temeš, and returns to Nitrianske Pravno via Handlová, Remata and Ráztočno. It is aimed at more experienced cyclists. Its features include climbs to mountain passes and riding on both paved and unpaved forest roads. When choosing between the two activities, their descriptions offer different points of reference: the nature trail is described as a circular hike with an approximate duration and elevation gain, while the cycling route is distinguished by its challenging nature and mix of road surfaces.
