Handlová brings its cultural and industrial history to life through a range of themes: an exhibition introduces the history of the Carpathian Germans, the mining museum illustrates coal mining, and an educational trail combines mining-related themes with insights into nature. Other highlights include a 14th-century church and historic traces of the railway. You can tailor your stay around culture, mining history or time outdoors.

Mining History and Exhibitions

At the Slovenské Banské Múzeum Handlová, reconstructed underground spaces illustrate how coal mining changed over time: the displays range from manual methods to mechanised mining, which began in the early 20th century. The museum is housed in a renovated building dating from 1913, originally used as a miners’ hotel. The building and exhibition thus offer two different insights into mining history.

The “Dejiny a kultúra Handlovej” exhibition presents the history and culture of the Germans who lived in Handlová. Through archaeological artefacts, it introduces visitors to the history of the Carpathian Germans in Handlová. It also displays mining tools that document the extraction of lignite. Cultural history and industrial work are presented here as distinct aspects of the town’s history.

The museum’s educational and leisure programme includes the so-called EKO dielnička. It provides space for extracurricular education, creative leisure activities and activities for all age groups. If this programme is important to your plans, check the workshop schedule before your trip.

Church, Residential Quarter and Railway History

The Kostol sv. Kataríny Alexandrijskej dates from the mid-14th century and is considered the oldest building in Handlová. The Banícka kolónia tells another part of the local story: it was built as a residential quarter for miners from across the then monarchy who came to work in Handlová. The church and the residential quarter therefore represent different historical themes—religious architecture and the settlement of workers.

The railway’s history can also be traced through specific dates. The Bralský tunel, also called the Tunel T. G. Masaryka, is 3.0116 kilometres long. It is part of a railway line built towards Turiec in the late 1920s and early 1930s. Another historical detail concerns a railway line that was completed in 1913, including the viaduct at its lower end. These two dates mark different stages in railway history; they do not refer to the same phase of construction.

Educational Trail and Routes Through Handlová

The Banský náučný chodník is accessible year-round. The green-marked route connects with a yellow-marked trail to the summit of Malý Grič and a red-marked trail to the summit of Veľký Grič. Both summits offer views of Handlová. Along the educational trail, visitors can also learn about activities related to coal mining in Handlová, as well as the local fauna and flora. Check the trail markings and conditions before setting out.

The Cesta na Remäta route starts at Námestie baníkov and follows the yellow-marked trail. It passes the post office and the service centre to a car park, crosses a bridge over a stream, and then continues uphill along 1. mája Street to the municipal swimming pool. There it joins Pstruhárska Street. Check the route and trail markings before setting out.

The different themes offer a range of starting points for planning your visit: the museum and exhibitions focus on mining and cultural history, while the church and Banícka kolónia reflect architectural and urban history. The educational trail adds nature and scenic views to these highlights. You can choose which aspects of Handlová to focus on during your stay.
