It was established in 1984 over 59.2 hectares and is subject to the fifth level of protection. The unstable andesite bedrock prevented quarrying there, allowing the forest to retain its original primeval character. Nature and geology are closely connected here.

Hiking Routes and Views

There is a small observation tower at the Malý Lubín viewpoint. From there, you can see across the Upper Nitra Basin and towards the Vtáčnik and Tribeč mountain ranges. The Chalmová Forest Educational Trail leads from the car park near the Chalmová thermal spa to this viewpoint, passing a wooden chapel dedicated to Saint Hubert along the way.

The Bystričiansky Circular Trail is 17.5 kilometres long and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. It starts at the entrance to the thermal spa and has six information boards. Another option is the blue-marked Route 2604: it leads from Bystricany through the Bystričianska Valley to Vtáčnik, is 14.2 kilometres long and has been named Chodník Petra Školnu since 2003. These distances provide a concrete comparison for planning the length of your route.

The summit of Vtáčnik can also be reached from Bystricany via a blue-marked hiking trail. There is a stainless-steel cross on the summit, with views from there across the Upper Nitra Basin and the surrounding mountains. Every August, Bystricany organises an ascent of Vtáčnik, which is linked to commemorations of the Slovak National Uprising.

The Hrádok area offers more than 80 climbing routes of varying difficulty. It is located in the Ponitrie Protected Landscape Area and in a Natura 2000 protected area.

Thermal Spa and Farm Activities

The Chalmová thermal spa has two outdoor pools: a swimming pool up to 25 metres long and another pool with water attractions and a children’s paddling area. The spring water is considered moderately mineralised and has a temperature of 24 to 40 degrees Celsius. As operating details may change, check seasonal opening times and current operations before your trip.

Farma pod Vtáčnikom makes fresh and smoked sheep’s cheese, sheep’s bryndza, matured cheeses and cow’s-milk cheese strings from freshly milked milk. Visitors can find draught beer and cheeses made on the farm. There is also a children’s playground, archery, various games and activities throughout the year.

Churches, Castle and Traditions

The Romanesque Church of Saint Anne in Chalmová was built in the 12th century on a hill behind the village, in the middle of a cemetery. In 1730, it was given a larger, transverse nave and an entrance tower. A pilgrimage to the church takes place in Chalmová every year; after a long interruption, it resumed in 1990.

Chalmová Castle and its park are listed as a national cultural monument. Originally built in the Renaissance style, the castle dates from the first half of the 17th century. It was later remodelled in the Classicist style and expanded in the second third of the 19th century. The historic park includes valuable trees, an entrance avenue and a pond.

On 15 August 2026, the castle reopened to the public after being closed for many years. The opening included guided tours, historical photographs and exhibitions. Check current access arrangements before visiting.

Sadenie mája is a traditional cultural event in Bystricany. Volunteer firefighters plant the Maypole. In 2025, the event included a children’s programme and local folk music; performers may vary.
