The Nitrianske Rudno Reservoir tells a story of engineering: it was built between 1951 and 1958 on the Nitrica River, originally to supply water to the Nováky thermal power plant and the chemical works. Its area of 89.7 hectares and total volume of 4.410 million cubic metres give the reservoir clearly defined measurements. At the water’s edge, its former purpose and seasonal leisure opportunities go hand in hand.

Enjoy the reservoir and nature

During the summer months, the reservoir offers opportunities for swimming and water sports. Cultural events, concerts and car and motorcycle gatherings are also held there. Sport anglers use the water during fishing seasons. The activities described therefore differ in when they take place: some are associated with the summer months, while fishing takes place during fishing seasons.

A nature trail by the reservoir focuses on the local flora and fauna, as well as important habitats in the Strážovské vrchy and in protected Natura 2000 sites. It complements the waterside experience with nature-related topics. Those especially interested in the landscape and views can explore the area from a different perspective on the Fraňa Madva nature trail.

On the Fraňa Madva nature trail

The Fraňa Madva nature trail starts in Nitrianske Rudno and ends in Nitrianske Sučany. Its landscape includes beech, pine and oak forests, meadows and rock formations with views of the Rudnianska Valley. Along with Brložná Cave, the route includes a short ascent secured with chains. Check the conditions on this section locally before setting out.

The traditional Fraňa Madva March also has a specific route: the 2026 edition followed an 11.7-kilometre route from the area around Madvova studnička towards Nitrianske Sučany. This historic edition can be considered as a separate route section, without equating it with the course of the nature trail.

Church, monument and local history

The Roman Catholic Church of Saints Andrew Svorad and Benedict was built between 1804 and 1816 on the site of a wooden church that had been destroyed by fire. A Lourdes grotto is located on the church grounds, south of the entrance. The Fraňa Madva monument was also erected there in 1925.

Fraňa Madva studied botany, collected and researched medicinal plants, and was widely sought after as a folk healer. Another local feature is Horný kaštieľ, also known as Javorčekeje dom; the house is considered the oldest in Nitrianske Rudno. A mining tradition is also part of the area’s cultural heritage.

Folk culture and events

Folk customs, traditions and traditional crafts are preserved in Nitrianske Rudno through various events. DĽH spod Rokoša performs songs from the Upper Nitra region, with a particular focus on the Rudnianska Valley. The Rokôška folklore ensemble has been active since 1986 and regularly performs at events in the region and beyond. Together, these groups reflect different connections to regional music: the particular focus on the Rudnianska Valley and the ensemble’s regular performances.

The Kaňová area is also a venue for local events: motocross races for the mayor’s cup were held there in 2024 and 2026. Those looking to compare cultural history, landscapes and seasonal activities will find a range of themes in Nitrianske Rudno, from water engineering and nature trails to music and local history.
