At the foot of the Strážovské vrchy and where the Radiša and Bebrava streams meet, Bánovce nad Bebravou combines a distinctive setting with a rich and varied history. Exploring the town brings more than churches and monuments into view: medieval crafts and present-day cultural and leisure activities are also part of its character.

Bánovce nad Bebravou was first mentioned in writing as Villa Ben in 1232. In the Middle Ages, the town was a center of cloth-making, shoemaking and weaving. These three trades add a craft dimension to the town’s history, complementing its later architectural landmarks.

Churches and monuments from different centuries

There are 15 cultural monuments in Bánovce nad Bebravou and its four adjoining districts, all listed in the Central Register of Monuments in Bratislava. Each place offers a different glimpse into history, and access arrangements may vary. If you would like to see a monument’s interior, check visiting arrangements in advance.

The Gothic Church of St. Nicholas the Bishop stands on a small hill in the northeastern part of the town. Its architectural origins date back to the first third of the 15th century. Inside are a neoclassical altar to St. Nicholas from the late 18th century and original crypts in the basement. This building brings together medieval beginnings and later decorative details.

The Church of the Holy Trinity reveals another layer of history: it was built in the neoclassical style in 1803 and received a Christmas nativity scene carved in 1929 by B. Rek of Kutná Hora. Beside the church stands a Baroque Marian column erected in 1712. The rectory to the west of the church occupies the site of an older rectory, demolished in 1794. The former rectory originally housed a polychrome Late Gothic wooden relief, considered one of the finest examples of Late Gothic sculpture in Slovakia.

The history of how a building has been used is also visible here: the former synagogue was built in 1862 in the Historicist style and is now used as an Evangelical Church of the Augsburg Confession. Visits are subject to local religious and access arrangements.

The Janko Jesenský Memorial House is associated with a literary and political legacy. It commemorates the ten years from 1905 to 1914, when the Slovak writer and politician lived and worked in Bánovce nad Bebravou. A plaque bearing a bronze bust by academic sculptor M. Tomášek is displayed on the house. Another part of the town’s history is represented by the Ľudovít Štúr monument, created in 1936 by academic sculptor Jozef Pospíšil; it remains the first and largest monument to Ľudovít Štúr in Slovakia.

In Horné Ozorovce, the Ottlý family manor house was converted into a small fortress in 1693. Its moat, drawbridge and watchtower show how different the complex is from the churches. Together, these examples give an impression of the variety of historic architectural styles in and around Bánovce nad Bebravou.

Views, landscapes and regional discoveries

At the town’s observation tower, information panels help visitors identify the surrounding mountain ranges, complemented by a compass set into the ground. At the reservoir, panels provide information about the plants, fungi and animals of the local landscape. Alongside the town’s architectural history, the landscape and its natural features are also in focus. Signage at the reservoir may change over time.

The region’s cultural context extends beyond the town to Uhrovský hrad Castle. Dating from the 13th century, the castle is now a ruin and is considered one of Slovakia’s most valuable castles for its architecture. The manor house in Dvorec is another excursion destination, reachable from Bánovce nad Bebravou by regular bus service. Bus services may change, so check the current timetable before travelling.

Swimming and local events

The indoor swimming pool in Bánovce nad Bebravou offers a range of swimming facilities: it has a 25-metre swimming pool and a 38 °C relaxation pool with massage features. It also offers individual swimming lessons to the public. Operating and booking arrangements may change, so check the current conditions if you are planning a visit or lessons.

The traditional Bánovský jarmok takes place on 16 and 17 October 2026 in the town center. Dates vary from year to year, so it is advisable to check the event dates before making plans. The spring Bánovský jarmok features stalls run by craftspeople and makers of folk products. Thus, alongside the town’s historic craft traditions, today’s market activity also comes into view, while the two events remain distinct.
