The Nitrianske Rudno reservoir combines seasonal water-based recreation with a nature trail along the water. There are also marked hiking trails, the Rokoš landscape, an MTB route and the history of the village, including a church dating from the early 19th century. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether water, nature, outdoor activities or local history should be your main focus.
Reservoir, nature trail and seasonal activities
The nature trail at the Nitrianske Rudno reservoir is open to visitors and runs for 1,330 metres along the reservoir’s existing boundary. Information boards along the route provide details about water bodies, the climate, the history of the municipality and features of the reservoir. In this way, the trail combines nature topics and local history with information about the body of water.
The reservoir is used for recreation during the summer months. Swimming and water sports are possible there in summer; during fishing seasons, it is used for sport fishing. The recreation area includes a public beach area, a car campsite and additional facilities. As individual facilities may change over time, it is worth checking the latest information before visiting.
Rokoš and the hiking trails
The Rokoš National Nature Reserve lies within the cadastral area of Nitrianske Rudno. The protected area has been subject to the highest, fifth level of nature protection since 1974. Rokoš is the only place in the Western Carpathians where Scots pine and downy oak grow side by side; as a result, montane and xerothermic vegetation overlap there. This distinctive combination makes Rokoš a clear nature attraction in the surrounding area.
Three marked hiking trails lead from Nitrianske Rudno to Košútova skala and Rokoš, Čierny vrch, and Boškovie laz. A hiking trail in Nitrianske Rudno passes through beech, pine and oak forests, as well as meadows. Its landscape features also include rock formations and views of the Rudnianska Valley. The named hiking destinations and the landscape described offer different points of reference when choosing the focus of your outings.
Cycling through Nitrianske Rudno
The Rokošská radiála leads to the Nitrianske Rudno reservoir and then continues through the village. The green-marked MTB route No. 5317 is 25.6 kilometres long and runs over asphalt, surfaced paths and forest tracks. Both the total length and the types of surfaces are important features when choosing your route. The route offers a different focus from the nature trail at the reservoir or the marked hiking trails to the destinations mentioned above.
Church, monument and culture
The Roman Catholic church in Nitrianske Rudno was built between 1804 and 1816 on the site of a wooden church destroyed by fire. It has a single nave, a straight-ended sanctuary and no presbytery separated from the nave. With its straight-ended sanctuary, it is one of the few churches of this type in the Horná Nitra region. A monument to Fraňa Madva, erected in 1925, stands in the church grounds.
Numerous cultural events, both large and small, take place in Nitrianske Rudno every year. Rudnianske dni is one of the many cultural and social events organised by the municipality. A folk music group performs songs from Upper Nitra and focuses in particular on the Rudnianska Valley, where all its members are from. If you would like to plan your visit around a specific event, check the dates in advance.
