Omastiná lies on the southwestern edge of the Strážovské vrchy and is surrounded by the mountains Rokoš and Čierny vrch. Traditional folk architecture and historic memorial sites complement the natural setting. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing trail information by scope: some figures describe a section within the village, while others refer to the entire route.

Hiking Trails and Route Details

The Chodník Alexandra Dubčeka hiking trail passes through Omastiná. Its section within the village is 1.64 km long and accounts for 4.8 percent of the trail’s length. This figure refers to the local section. By contrast, the route “Omastinná, chata – Nitrianske Rudno, kemping” also has a stated total length: 8.5 km. Of this, 3.8 km, or 44.8 percent, runs through Omastiná. The figures can therefore be considered side by side without confusing the village section with the full route.

The 8.5-km route also lists 4.5 km of ascent and 4.0 km of descent. Together, these add up to the total length and show how the route is divided between ascent and descent. Hikes to Mount Rokoš also start in Omastiná. This offers a choice of different hiking options: a trail that passes through the village, a route with specified total and elevation distances, and ascents to a named mountain. Before setting out, check trail conditions and signage.

The Stream and Traditional Architecture

The stream is part of the village layout and flows through Omastiná. Following it through the village will bring you to a spot with crystal-clear water and a gentle waterfall. Water conditions can vary seasonally. Traditional folk architecture is also closely connected to the stream: it separates regularly arranged stone houses in the village center. The stream and the layout of the houses can thus be viewed together as defining features of the village plan.

The folk houses include upper-floor chambers locally known as “výšky.” They were usually accessed by an outside staircase. The term therefore refers to a specific feature of local building design. Another architectural landmark is the village bell tower: it has a square floor plan and a Baroque bell dating from 1742. The bell tower and the houses offer different insights into Omastiná’s architectural heritage.

Memorial Sites and Traces of the Past

During the Second World War, residents of Omastiná supported partisan units and took part in the Slovak National Uprising. A monument to the victims of the uprising stands in the center. The village’s history is therefore also present at a named memorial site in the village center. Another historical landmark is a watermill with a millrace: it operated from the late 18th century and was decommissioned in 1959.

An archaeological trace lies within the area of the present-day municipality: the Vlčí dol cave was the site of a settlement with incised pottery. Together with the houses, bell tower, mill, and monument, these traces offer different ways to explore Omastiná’s history. They range from architectural details and the mill’s former operation to events of the 20th century and an archaeological site.
