Veľké Hoste lies by the Livina stream at the foot of Považský Inovec, in the Zlatnícka dolina. Its local history stretches from archaeological traces of various periods to 20th-century memorial sites; religious and culinary traditions add further highlights to the annual calendar. If you want to focus on cultural history and regional customs during your stay, the village offers several distinct themes to explore.
Location and Regional Context
Locally, the Zlatnícka dolina is also called „Suchá dolina“ or „Suchodolie“. Veľké Hoste is part of the Suchodolie microregion, whose annual relay race runs through the entire Suchá dolina. The names therefore reflect both a local landscape connection and a wider regional context.
Archaeology Across Several Periods
The area around Veľké Hoste has been continuously inhabited for about 4,000 years. The archaeological record includes a Neolithic settlement, a settlement of the Lengyel culture from the Late Bronze Age, settlements from the Hallstatt period and the Roman Imperial period, as well as a Slavic burial mound dating from the 7th to the 9th century. This long timeline and the individual sites tell different parts of the settlement history: alongside settlement sites, they include a burial mound and clearly identified periods.
The Chrástky educational trail, newly opened in 2025, passes through an archaeological site with burial grounds from various periods, from the Lusatian culture to the era of Great Moravia. The focus here is on the burial grounds and their chronological span.
Chapel and Memorial Sites
Several residents helped build the Chapel of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows; by 1917, the building was nearly complete. A description from 2017 notes that inside is a statue brought from Poland, carved from a single piece of wood. The bell tower in Veľké Hoste dates from the 16th century and has been reconstructed.
Every September, Catholic worshippers gather at the chapel in the upper part of Veľké Hoste to mark the Feast of Our Lady of the Seven Sorrows. A plaque at the SNP memorial in the village centre names twelve residents who died in the uprising and in fascist concentration camps.
The B-17 crash memorial was made by residents from the remains of the bomber. It commemorates an American bomber that crashed in Veľké Hoste on 1 February 1945; four airmen lost their lives. A report from 2025 also describes an annual gathering at the crash site of soldiers, villagers and members of KVH Geronimo.
Traditions and Events
The traditional autumn „Kačacie hody“ bring together a dance evening, stuffed duck cooked in a wood-fired oven, lokše and fresh cabbage salad. The exact dates vary. This distinction from the chapel celebration can help when choosing when to visit: the chapel celebration takes place in September, while the dates of the Kačacie hody are not fixed to a particular day.
The 2026 edition of „Veľko-Hostianska vatra“ included craft markets, historical demonstrations, archery and horse-related activities. The bonfire was lit at 8 pm, followed by a fire show and an evening programme of music and dancing. The programme for this edition thus included both historical themes and evening activities, without implying a future date or programme.
Educational Trail and Cycling Loop
A cycling loop also passes through Veľké Hoste: „Duchonka – Zlatníky – Solčianky – Topoľčany“. It is a different kind of route from the Chrástky educational trail, which focuses on an archaeological site and burial grounds. If you plan to cycle the loop, check the current route conditions before setting out.
