Pečeňany combines a layered local history with three very different religious buildings. The late-18th-century brick bell tower, a chapel with a Baroque bell and a modern church on a hill give the village a clear cultural and historical focus. If you are looking for a holiday apartment for a cultural and historical stay, Pečeňany can be explored through its buildings, history and events.

Buildings from Different Centuries

The bell tower is a prism-shaped brick structure from the late 18th century; its sound openings are on the upper floor. The chapel dates from the 20th century and houses a Baroque bell from the 18th century. The chapel and its bell therefore date from different centuries. The Church of the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin Mary provides a later architectural accent. It is a modern church building from the late 20th century and stands on a hill in the eastern part of Pečeňany. The building has a single nave, an irregular rectangular floor plan and a projecting prism-shaped tower. Its stained-glass windows feature biblical motifs. At the bell tower, the focus is on the brick structure and its upper section; at the church, the floor plan, tower and windows shape the overall impression. Together, the buildings invite comparison between the bell tower, the chapel with its older bell, and the church with its distinctive architectural features.

Local History: Historical Milestones

Pečeňany developed from a settlement inhabited by Pechenegs in the 11th and 13th centuries. At that time, the ruler assigned the Pechenegs guard duties. In 1323, the village was mentioned in writing under the forms “Besenyev” and “Bezenew.” The settlement and the name forms offer different ways into its history: one leads to the centuries mentioned above, the other to a written record from the 14th century. Together with the later buildings, they make it possible to shift the focus from the history of settlement to the visible architecture.

Events and Village Life

“Pečeňanský Hviezdoslav” was held in 2026 as the sixth edition of a children’s recitation competition. The “Furmanské preteky” took place in 2023 and 2024. The “Fašiangový sprievod” took place in 2025 and 2026; in 2025, it also included “pochovávanie basy.” “Stavanie mája” was held in 2023 and 2026. These dated examples complement the picture of the buildings with a range of events in the village, including a recitation competition specifically for children.

Landscape and Orientation

Pečeňany is located in gently hilly terrain in the uplands and away from the main transport routes. At the same time, the village is connected to the national road network via road III/1835. You can take both details into account when planning your journey. There is also a sports facility with a football pitch in the southeastern part of the built-up area. Its location provides an additional point of reference if you want to include the village’s recreational facilities in your plans alongside its buildings and history.
