Anyone looking to combine scenery and architectural history in Tvarožná will find two specific starting points: an easy walk from Vrbov and the village’s historic churches and houses. The route leads through a pine forest up to meadows above Tvarožná; in clear weather, the view reaches as far as the High Tatras. At the same time, the village’s history extends from town rights granted in 1271 to buildings from later centuries.

Location between the Poprad Basin and the Levočské vrchy

Tvarožná lies southeast of Kežmarok in the Vrbovská pahorkatina, in the Poprad Basin and at the northwestern foot of the Levočské planiny in the Levočské vrchy. Thus, both the basin and the named highlands are part of the village’s geographical setting. An official record dated May 31, 2024, lists parts of Tvarožná’s cadastral area within the Levočské vrchy Protected Bird Area. Before visiting, check the current official boundaries of the protected area; the record applies to parts of the cadastral area.

An easy walk from Vrbov

An easy walk leads from Vrbov to Tvarožná. The route passes through a pine forest and, as it climbs, reaches meadows above the village. These meadows offer views of Tvarožná, Ľubica and Kežmarok, as well as the High Tatras; how far you can see depends on the weather. The forest and meadows create contrasting landscape impressions: the pine forest characterizes the route, while the views come from the higher meadows. The walk is therefore defined not only by its destination but also by the transition between forest and meadows.

Churches from different periods

The Roman Catholic Church of St Matthew the Apostle dates back to the 13th century. In the 15th century, it was extensively rebuilt in the High and Late Gothic styles. It is also known for its bronze baptismal font. The church’s origins and rebuilding belong to different historical building phases; the baptismal font adds another notable feature to its architectural history.

The Evangelical church in Tvarožná was built in 1778 in the Baroque-Classical style. As early as the 17th century, Evangelicals persecuted by the Counter-Reformation were allowed to build a wooden artikulárny church; this earlier church has not survived. The history thus includes both the 1778 building and an older, lost place of worship. The Catholic and Evangelical architectural histories can be distinguished by their dates and their different style designations.

Burghers’ houses, a monument and town rights

Several original burghers’ houses from the 17th to the 19th centuries have been preserved in Tvarožná. A Baroque sandstone column with a statue of the Immaculata was erected in 1730. While the houses span several centuries, the column is dated to a single year. The village’s administrative history is also part of its character: from 1271, Tvarožná exercised town rights and was administered under German Saxon law. This early historical detail complements the later evidence of churches, homes and the monument.

Scenery or architectural history?

The nature walk and local history offer different ways to focus your visit. The walk leads from Vrbov through the pine forest to the meadows above Tvarožná; the cultural history ranges from churches and burghers’ houses to the sandstone column. If you enjoy walking, the route offers a direct connection with the landscape. If you are more interested in history, you can explore the churches’ different construction and rebuilding periods. Both perspectives lead to the same destination, but highlight different aspects.
