Žirany brings together religious architectural history, preserved clay houses, traces of traditional crafts and marked routes. The village lies in the Žirany Pass at an elevation of 251 m, in the headwaters of the Hunták and Bocegaj streams. For orientation, it helps to distinguish between the village’s history and getting around: chapels, a stone cross and village houses are tangible cultural features, alongside hiking trails that pass through Žirany.

Chapels, Churches and Village Architecture

The Chapel of Saint Urban was built in the vineyards in 1795. A stone cross dating from 1823 stands near the road in the parish courtyard. Two other chapels in Žirany are dedicated to Saint John of Nepomuk, dating from 1843, and Saint Vendelin, dating from 1912. The church also has several construction phases: Žirany had a Baroque church dating from 1734; the present church building was newly constructed in 1938–1939.

Preserved clay houses showcase a distinctive architectural style: they have three rooms and hipped roofs. The Žirany Folk House, also called tájház, houses an exhibition on folk culture. Visits must be arranged in advance, so please agree on a time before you arrive. There is also a memorial plaque in the vestibule of the cultural centre.

Crafts and Historical Traces

Since the 17th century, the hand quarrying of limestone and the production of quicklime in simple kilns on the eastern slopes of Vápenník and Žibrica have been part of the village’s history. The Žirany Municipal Museum was ceremonially opened on 11 December 1977. A written record from 1379 states that the Esztergom Chapter established the right to import wine from Žirany. It describes a historical import right, not a present-day wine experience.

Trails and Landscape

The red-marked Ponitrianska Magistrála passes through Žirany. The Kostoliansky Educational Trail runs between Gýmeš and Kostolianske lúky; in Žirany, its stations are numbered 32, 33 and 34. The two routes offer different points of reference: the Magistrála’s red markers and the educational trail’s numbered stations. Check the route and markers on site before setting out.

The 68.59 ha Žibrica Nature Reserve lies on the southern slopes and ridge of Žibrica. It represents forest-steppe landscape and thermophilous deciduous forests on limestone bedrock. Limestone therefore appears in two different contexts: as the bedrock of the protected area and as the material hand-quarried historically on the eastern slopes of Vápenník and Žibrica.

Practical Information

Žirany’s recreation centre includes an amphitheatre, a traffic training area, swings, a slide, two tennis courts, a volleyball court and a concrete area for mini-football. As the availability of individual facilities may change, check which ones are open before visiting.

Žirany can be reached by regional bus, and parking is also available. Check current services and conditions in advance, as transport and parking arrangements may change.
