Čifáre combines a settlement history dating back to the Palaeolithic with a distinctive location in the northern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina. Archaeological sites, the parish church of St John the Evangelist and a recurring goulash-cooking competition give the village a variety of cultural points of interest. At the same time, the municipality lies in the valley of the Telinský potok stream and has a predominantly open landscape with remnants of oak forest. If you are looking for a holiday rental in Čifáre, you can plan your stay around local history, the landscape and event dates.

Landscape in the Hilly Countryside

Čifáre lies in the northern part of the Pohronská pahorkatina and in the valley of the Telinský potok stream. The hilly countryside consists of younger Tertiary clays, sands and gravels, overlain by a layer of loess. The landscape can therefore be understood both in terms of its valley and hilltop setting and its geological structure. Most of the municipal area is deforested; remnants of oak forest are found in the southeast and northwest. Čifáre is therefore not simply a forest area: open land dominates, with the oak forest remnants forming limited areas in contrast. There is also a 16-hectare water reservoir in the eastern part of the municipal area.

Archaeology and Building History

The earliest settlement of Čifáre dates back to the Palaeolithic. Specific finds come from several archaeological sites. At Kapustnická (Káposztás), a claw-shaped tool made of local andesite was found, resembling a hand axe. A flint core was discovered in the Bomha valley, and a flint scraper at the Stredné siatie site. Thus, a tool made of local andesite sits alongside two different flint finds: a core and a scraper. These finds give the long history of settlement tangible forms and materials.

The parish church of St John the Evangelist is also part of the village’s building history. It was built in 1774 on the foundations of an earlier church.

Events and Regional Context

The 20th Čifáre goulash-cooking competition was held in 2025, and the 21st in 2026. The 2026 edition took place at the Tibor Mészároš Football Stadium. The successive editions show that the competition is a recurring local event. If you would like to plan around a future edition, check the latest dates before travelling.

Another glimpse of local food and wine events is the public wine tasting organised by the Čifáre Winegrowers’ Association at the cultural centre on 7 April 2018. This date is a historical example; together with the competitions held in 2025 and 2026, it shows the difference between a single older event and a recurring one. This helps put the village’s culinary focus into a clearer timeline without treating the two types of event as equivalent.
