Báb is shaped by a loess hill landscape, an artificial mound crowned with three crosses, and the Baroque Church of St. Emeric. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, you can explore the area through different interests: landscapes and bodies of water alongside sacred architecture and local history.

Loess Hills and Protected Forest Landscapes

Oak and hornbeam forests grow on the slopes of a small valley southeast of Báb. Other parts of the area have been cleared of forest. The landscape therefore ranges from small wooded areas on the slopes to places without tree cover.

The Natura 2000 site SKUEV0869 Bábsky les is a preserved island of forest in the agricultural, gently hilly landscape of the Trnava Hills. Its habitats include oak forests on loess and Pannonian oak-hornbeam forests; ancient, imposing trees also grow here. The Bábsky les National Nature Reserve was designated in 1966 and covers 30.39 hectares. The fifth level of protection applies within the reserve. The third level of protection applies in the 100-metre-wide buffer zone outside the reserve boundary.

The Veľký Báb National Nature Reserve offers a different natural highlight: it preserves remnants of alluvial forests on the broad floodplains of the Nitra and Žitava rivers. Pheasants, quail, hares, and other field rodents and birds live in the so-called cultural steppe. This contrasts oak forests on loess with alluvial forests and the wildlife of the cultural steppe—different highlights for anyone especially interested in habitats and nature when planning a trip.

Calvary, Church and Local History

The Calvary site consists of an artificial earthen mound with three crosses at its summit. A different perspective on the area’s history comes from a document dating to 1156: it contains the first known written mention of Báb and was written by Martírius, Archbishop of Esztergom. The date is therefore a written reference point for the area’s history.

The Baroque Church of St. Emeric was built in 1721 on the site of an older sacred building, which was already mentioned in 1559. Its interior combines different styles of decoration: the main altar is Neoclassical and depicts Saint Emeric before the Virgin Mary. The side altars are Rococo altars dedicated to the Pietà and Saint John of Nepomuk. The Rococo pulpit also dates from the mid-18th century; its relief depicts a scene from the life of Christ. Those who consider the building’s history and its furnishings separately will find both the date of the church’s construction and specific details about its artworks here.

Landscape Park and Manor House

The Veľký kaštieľ manor house, Alexandrov dvor, is surrounded by an extensive landscape park dating from the first half of the 19th century. In 1982, the Bábsky park protected landscape area was designated to protect the historic park surrounding the manor house, covering an area of 4.22 hectares. The park and manor house therefore have an explicitly stated historical connection; the protected area covers the park and does not automatically grant access to the grounds.

Reservoir and Fishing

Vodná nádrž Báb is located in the cadastral area of Malý Báb on the Bábský potok and is used for irrigation. An area of approximately 18 hectares and a usable storage capacity of 600,000 m³ are given for this purpose. For fishing, the same facility is listed as a 27-hectare carp fishing water. Local and special fishing permits are required. So if fishing is important to you, make sure to include the appropriate permit in your plans.

Seasonal Products

The Sýpka u Ludvíka shop often stocks fresh Cheesio cheeses, jams made from seasonal fruit, and eggs from its own hens. In autumn, duck liver preserved in its own fat is available; during the holidays, egg liqueur; and in spring, herb pesto. These seasonal offerings provide another possible point of interest when planning: what you find there depends on the time of year.
