Veľké Zálužie is located in the Nitrianska pahorkatina, which forms part of the larger Podunajská pahorkatina landscape area. For planning your trip, you can distinguish between two different focuses: architectural history and cycling opportunities. The Marian Column, parish church and castle represent different historical periods, while the blue cycling route and the Cyklopark offer different ways to cycle. This can help you organise your interests before planning your stay.

Local History and Churches

The municipality was already inhabited in the Neolithic period, around 5000 BC. Until the end of the 19th century, Veľké Zálužie developed as a small settlement with a toll station. The original medieval church is first mentioned in writing in a list of papal tithes from 1333 to 1337. Another historical marker is the Roman Catholic parish church: built in 1769 in the Baroque-Classicist style, it was dedicated to All Saints. It underwent extensive restoration between 2003 and 2005.

The church interior contains sculptures of various saints, including depictions of Saint Joseph, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Nicholas, Saint Ambrose, Saint Peter and Saint Paul. Beneath the church is a crypt where local counts are buried. The main altar dedicated to All Saints dates from the late 18th century. It has been reconstructed and is once again in use.

The Marian Column is a Baroque column topped with a statue of the Immaculata. It dates from 1753 and has been registered as a national cultural monument since 1963 under number 1565/1-2. In chronological terms, the column and parish church were built 16 years apart: 1753 for the column and 1769 for the church.

Castle and Park

The Forgách family built the castle as their family residence. The Empire-style building dates from the early 19th century and was erected on older foundations. It has a U-shaped floor plan and two storeys. In terms of both its period and architectural form, it differs from the churches and the Marian Column.

The castle park currently covers 9 hectares and was laid out as a natural landscape park with numerous gravel paths. The area is designated a protected natural monument. Thus, the buildings are notable for their construction periods and architecture, while the park stands out for its landscape design and protected status.

Cycling in Veľké Zálužie

The blue cycling route passes through Veľké Zálužie. Check the local signage before setting off. The Cyklopark, located on the grounds of the sports club, offers a different option: it is open around the clock and free to access. Its paved pump track can be used with bicycles, scooters, skateboards, longboards and roller skates. This lets you choose between a route through the village and a facility for various wheeled activities. As the facility may change, check the latest information and opening conditions before your visit.

There is also a free e-bike charging station on the CTVZ grounds in Veľké Zálužie, available around the clock. Confirm its availability before travelling. The cycling route, pump track and charging station therefore cater to different aspects of a cycling trip: a route through the village, a facility for various wheeled activities and a place to charge an e-bike.
