On the eastern bank of the Cetínka, Veľký Cetín brings together specific cycling routes and a varied local history. Two distinct highlights can help you plan your trip: choosing between a 4.3-kilometre road cycling route and a longer mountain biking circuit, and exploring the history of the church, the memorial and archaeological sites. The river, vineyards and views in every direction complete the picture of the village.

Cycling between the river embankment and the village road

The Ponitrianska Cycling Route, Route 019, leads to Veľký Cetín below the embankment and then returns to the river embankment. This connects the village to the route. Route 8131 Paňa–Veľký Cetín offers a different perspective: it is 4.3 kilometres long, paved, rated easy and suitable for recreation. It runs through Veľký Cetín to the Nitra River, where it ends at a junction with the Ponitrianska Cycling Route.

Route 2118, the Dolné Krškany–Branč–Poľný Kesov–Cabaj–Čápor circuit, covers considerably more distance. This 43.1-kilometre mountain biking route is also described as easy and suitable for recreation. It follows paved roads and surfaced paths. Together with the Ponitrianska Cycling Route, it heads towards Veľký Cetín, where it then branches off towards Branč.

The lengths of 4.3 and 43.1 kilometres offer a clear comparison, even though the routes differ in type: one is an easy road cycling route on paved roads, the other a mountain biking circuit on paved roads and surfaced paths. When choosing a ride, you can weigh up both the distance and the route type, rather than comparing only the number of kilometres.

Church, memorial and archaeological sites

The Church of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary was originally Gothic and was built in 1307. It was remodelled in 1692 and rebuilt again in 1911. Its baptismal font also combines different art-historical elements: the Renaissance foot dates from the 16th century, while the Baroque basin dates from the 18th century. The church is in good condition and continues to serve its religious purpose.

In front of the church, in a park-like area on Kostolná Street, stands the war memorial. It was erected in 1993 in memory of local victims of the wars of the 20th century and created by sculptor Nagy János. Its location, dedication and creator give the memorial a specific place in the village’s history.

The archaeological history reaches back to earlier periods. Excavations in Veľký Cetín uncovered a Slavic settlement. A La Tène settlement and a Quadi burial ground dating from the Late Roman Imperial period have also been documented in Veľký Cetín. These different finds complement the church’s architectural history with further historical periods.

River setting and vineyards

Veľký Cetín lies on the eastern bank of the Cetínka River. From Veľký Cetín, the views extend in every direction. The highest point of Veľký Cetín lies among the vineyards between Veľký Cetín and Paňa, at an elevation of 209 metres above sea level. The riverbank and vineyards thus offer different perspectives on the village’s landscape.

The highlights offer a simple contrast: the routes provide different cycling options, while the church, memorial and archaeological history focus on the cultural heritage. This makes it possible to discover Veľký Cetín through both its cycling routes and its architectural and local history.
