Habovka brings together historic churches and vibrant folklore with marked trails and routes through the surrounding area. When planning a trip, visitors can choose from several points of interest: local history, a walk along the nature trail or excursions into the Roháče landscape. The specific trail lengths and destinations make it easier to choose activities to suit your stay.

Churches, Stations of the Cross and Folklore

The Church of Our Lady of Sorrows is the fourth church to stand at this site. Construction of the present church building began in 1821. Another landmark in the village’s history is the Chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene, which was completed and consecrated in 1856. Both buildings offer tangible points of reference for Habovka’s cultural history, with distinct construction and consecration stories to explore.

The Stations of the Cross in Habovka line the path to the cemetery and comprise fourteen chapels. They were completed on 22 June and consecrated on 26 June. Their elements are enclosed behind protective glass and illuminated from within by energy-efficient LED lamps. This site combines the religious significance of the Stations of the Cross with visible features of their design. Visitors interested in religious heritage will find another distinct point of interest here, alongside the churches.

Folklore is also part of the village’s cultural identity: Vidiečanova Habovka is an annual national folklore competition featuring the folk music of children and adults. It has been held in Habovka since 1976. The competition Habovský kardan, featuring homemade mini-tractors, has a different origin story: the idea arose in Habovka in 2000; the concept was aimed at participants and also included spectators. The two competitions represent different aspects of local cultural life—folk music on the one hand and a competition featuring homemade mini-tractors on the other.

Nature Trail, Recreation Area and Cycling Routes

The Cestami minulosti nature trail is 4.22 kilometres long and has seven signposted stops. It connects seven sites in Habovka and two in Hustopeče. Apart from the spurs to stops 1 and 7, it follows paved paths and is suitable for walking and cycling. Its length, number of stops and path surface make it a clearly defined way to explore the sites along the trail.

The OSLY recreation area includes, among other features, cascades, the Rosary Staircase and the named areas Na vstupe, V srdci, Slza and Nádej. Access is from Habovka-Stodoliska in the Kubáňovka area. The route also has free bicycle service facilities for cyclists, where they can inflate tyres, tighten screws, adjust brakes and repair punctures at any time.

Several different cycling routes are described. One connects Habovka, Bory and the Orava Open-Air Museum, then returns to Habovka. Another is a circular route from Habovka to Bobrovecká dolina and back; from Habovka, there is also a route towards Oravice. The routes differ mainly in their stated destinations: one leads to the open-air museum, while the other goes to Bobrovecká dolina.

Architecture and Nature Nearby

The nearby Orava Open-Air Museum features more than 50 folk-architecture buildings in several regional ensembles at the foot of the Roháče. A visit complements Habovka’s churches and traditions with a look at regional architectural styles. Visitors wishing to focus more on culture can compare the local religious buildings with the folk architecture at the museum.

The circular trail around the Roháč Lakes passes through Roháčská dolina, by six mountain lakes and the Roháč Waterfall. From Habovka, access is by bus via Zuberec towards Zverovka; conditions in the mountains vary. This makes the excursion different from the shorter, paved sections of the nature trail. When planning, take both the bus connection and changing mountain conditions into account.

There is also a 12-kilometre, machine-groomed cross-country ski loop in the Habovka–Medzi Bory–Zuberec Brehy–Orava Open-Air Museum area. Grooming depends on snow conditions. The available information therefore offers practical guidance when choosing between activities: culture and folklore have their own place in Habovka, while cycling, hiking and winter routes involve different destinations and conditions.
