The Orava and Oravica flow through Tvrdošín, as do their tributaries, Medvecký potok and Hldočín. The town also has a long architectural history: the Gothic wooden Church of All Saints dates from the first half of the 15th century, received an award from Europa Nostra in 1994, and was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2008. The riverside landscape and historic sites offer two distinct, easily recognisable ways to explore Tvrdošín.

Rivers and protected areas

The Tvrdošín balancing reservoir, with a stated volume of 2.9 million cubic metres, is located on the Orava. The Orava and its tributaries form a Ramsar wetland of international importance. The small CHA protected area of the Orava River includes Tvrdošín on both sides of the river and is subject to the fourth level of protection. Together, these details show different aspects of the riverside landscape: a named reservoir, the international importance of the wetland, and the protection status of the river area.

Wooden church and historic centre

The Church of All Saints is part of Tvrdošín’s protected heritage zone. This includes Trinity Square and the adjoining historic urban fabric, with its Gothic wooden church. The historic centre was declared a protected heritage zone on 1 June 1991. Trinity Square is also home to a late Baroque Marian column, created in the late 18th century in the workshop of the Belopotocký stonemason family from Oravský Biely Potok. On the north side of the churchyard is a sandstone statue of Saint John of Nepomuk. It also dates from the late 18th century and is attributed to stonemasons from the Bielopotocký family.

The town hall also reflects different periods of construction: it was built between 1872 and 1875 on older foundations dating from the 18th century. During a visit, you can also consider the wooden church in its historical context: it originated in the early 15th century, while the Europa Nostra award and its addition to the UNESCO World Heritage List came much later. The centre thus brings together architectural history and later recognition.

For the 2026 summer season, the Church of All Saints was open to the public daily from 1 May to 30 September, except Mondays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Outside the season, visits are possible by prior arrangement; bookings must be made at least one day in advance. Check visitor information before your trip.

Chapels and religious traditions

The Skalka Rock Chapel was carved into a rock around 1870 and later became a pilgrimage site. Worshippers gather there for prayers, litanies, the Stations of the Cross, and a Mass on the Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows. In Oravice, a district of Tvrdošín, the Chapel of Saint Anne was built between 1817 and 1820 and restored in 1864. The Church of the Sacred Heart stands in the Krásna Hôrka district; it was built in 1890 and regular Sunday Masses are held there. The three sites bring together different periods of construction, each with its own religious significance.

Gallery, folklore and fair

The Mária Medvecká Gallery was open to the public daily from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. during the 2026 summer season. The admission price included the permanent exhibition and one additional exhibition. If you are planning a visit, check the opening hours in advance.

The folklore festival beneath Osobita takes place in the natural amphitheatre in Oravice, a district of Tvrdošín. The town holds the festival annually; in 2026, the 35th edition took place there. Dates and programmes for future editions may change, so it is worth checking the latest information before travelling. Another tradition is the Michalský fair. The 2025 edition featured handicrafts, traditional specialities, handmade products and a range of refreshments. The offerings may vary from year to year.

Swimming and relaxation

The municipal indoor swimming pool in Tvrdošín is open year-round and caters to fitness swimming, swimming sports and recreational swimming. The wellness area includes a Finnish sauna, a steam sauna and an infrared sauna, as well as a whirlpool and loungers. If you plan to visit the pool, check the latest information on access and facilities in advance.
