Oravsky Biely Potok can be explored through two specific interests: the village’s stonecutting and church history, and a mountain-bike-suitable cycling route that passes through it. The village lies in the valley of the Studený potok in the Skorušina Mountains. When choosing where to stay, you can consider whether local cultural history should be the main focus or whether cycling should also be part of your trip.

Location and Getting There

State Road 2/584 runs through the village. If you are arriving by car, take this connection into account when planning and check current road conditions separately.

Stonecutting Tradition and Local History

Oravsky Biely Potok was first mentioned in connection with stonecutting in 1728 as a center of millstone production. The village also became one of the centers of stonecutting production in the Orava region. Local tradition also included ring-shaped well rims called “címere,” which were up to two meters in size. Millstones and well rims represent different products of stonework: millstone production on the one hand, and another type of well rim on the other. Those interested in the history of crafts will find a distinct historical focus here alongside the church and crosses.

Church, Crosses and Folklore

Kostol sv. Štefana, kráľa is a single-nave church in the Neoclassical style, built between 1797 and 1800. Its interior is predominantly Baroque. To understand its classification, it helps to distinguish between its layout, architectural style and furnishings: “single-nave” describes a church space with one main nave, “Neoclassical” identifies the church’s style, while “predominantly Baroque” describes the character of its interior. This offers several precise perspectives on the same building rather than assigning it to just one period.

The village’s features also include 13 stone crosses with statues of saints. Access conditions may vary from one cross to another, so bear this in mind if you plan to visit several. Folklore is another cultural focus: FS Osľárik preserves the folklore traditions of Oravsky Biely Potok. You can therefore choose between stonework and crosses on the one hand, and folklore traditions on the other.

Cesta Kameňa: Planned Work for 2026

The Cesta Kameňa project was planned for March to September 2026 to present Oravsky Biely Potok’s stonecutting tradition and artifacts as cultural heritage. As part of the project, the restoration of four stone crosses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries was planned for March to August 2026. Also planned for 2026 were accessible cemetery access for visitors with limited mobility and four bilingual information panels at the cemetery entrance. As these time frames have passed, check before your visit whether the work was completed if this is important for your plans.

Cycling as Another Focus

For cycling travelers, the Podbiel–Ťatliakovo jazero route is a specific option: it passes through Oravsky Biely Potok and is suitable for mountain bikes. You can decide whether to make the cycling route your main focus or combine it with the village’s cultural attractions. Before setting off, it is advisable to check the current surface and route conditions.
